About This Manual

About This Manual

Welcome to the installation and operation documentation for the Dial Access Switching (DAS) system. The DAS system supports dial-up and dial-backup Frame Relay applications. Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection Family, is updated monthly. Therefore, it might be more up to date than printed documentation. For more information, see the section, Cisco CD ROM.

This preface contains the following sections:

Objectives

This publication will step you through the initial site preparation, installation, and configuration of the DAS Server Shelf, which is the processor for the Dial Access Switching system, and the Dial-Up Frame Relay application. The DAS Server Shelf works with, and is typically co-located with, a Cisco wide-area switch, such as a Cisco BPX® 8600 series wide-area switch, a Cisco IGXTM series wide-area switch, or a Cisco IPX® wide-area switch.

Audience

This publication is designed for the person installing the DAS Server Shelf, who should be familiar with electronic circuitry and wiring practices and have experience as an electronic or electromechanical technician. It is also intended for the network administrator who will configure the DAS Server Shelf and the Dial-Up Frame Relay application. The installers and network administrators should also be familiar with Cisco wide-area switches, Frame Relay connections, Cisco StrataView Plus ® network management systems, and Cisco WAN switching networks. During the initial installation of a DAS Server Shelf, it is also helpful to have a system administrator on-hand who is familiar with your network and UNIX servers.

Organization

Chapter 1 Introduction the Dial Access Switching System

Provides a brief description of the DAS Server Shelf and the Dial-Up Frame Relay application. It includes examples of dial-up and dial-backup connections.

Chapter 2 Site Requirements

Provides information about the electrical power and rack requirements necessary to install a DAS Server Shelf.

Chapter 3 Unpack and Inspect the DAS Server Shelf

Provides a description of the DAS Server Shelf shipping container, as well as front- and rear-views of both the AC and DC versions of the DAS Server Shelf.

Chapter 4 Rack Mounting the DAS Server Shelf

Provides procedures for installing the DAS Server Shelf in a rack.

Chapter 5 Connecting Power to the DAS Server Shelf

Provides procedures for connecting AC or DC power to the DAS Server Shelf.

Chapter 6 DAS Server Shelf Interface Connections

Provides procedures for connecting the DAS Server Shelf to the Cisco wide-area switch (PBX, IGX, or IPX switch) and the StrataView Plus Workstation.

Chapter 7 Loading DAS Daemon Software on the StrataView Plus Workstation

Provides instructions for loading DAS (INS) daemon software on the StrataView Plus workstation.

Chapter 8 Configuring the Dial-Up Frame Relay Application

Provides an overview of the steps that are necessary to configure Dial-Up or Dial-Backup Frame Relay connections, after the DAS Server Shelf is installed and connected.

Chapter 9 Creating a DAS Topology Object with HP OpenView

Provides a procedure for creating an DAS object with the HP OpenView Topology tools.

Chapter 10 Understanding the DAS Command Line Interface

Provides procedures for using the Dial-Up Frame Relay Command Line Interface (CLI) to view and set parameters on the DAS Server Shelf. The CLI, which is not integrated with StrataView Plus, can be accessed through a remote connection or through a terminal directly connected to the DAS Server Shelf.

Chapter 11 Configuring Automatic Number Identifiers

Describes how to use the INS ANI Configuration Interface which is accessed via the StrataView Plus Main Menu, to define parameters for Dial-Up and Dial-Backup calls associated with an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) ANI.

Chapter 12 Configuring Dial-Up Connections

Describes how to use the StrataView Plus Connection Manager to configure Dial-Up Connections.

Chapter 13 Configuring Dial-Backup Connections

Describes how to use the StrataView Plus Connection Manager to configure Dial-Backup connections. Note that this also involves "associating" a "normal" frame-relay connection with a Dial-Backup connection.

Chapter 14 Dial-Up Frame Relay Operation

Provides some quick reference tables for frequently done INS Dial-Up Frame Relay tasks.

Appendix A Cable Information

Provides information about the DAS Server Shelf power cables suppled by Cisco.

Appendix B Dial-In Support

Provides information about attaching a modem to the DAS Server Shelf to allow Cisco StrataCom's Customer Service to dial-in and provide support for Dial-Up Frame Relay.

Appendix C Troubleshooting

Provides some overall troubleshooting hints and a description of some DAS system troubleshooting tools such as the Frame Relay Status Utility, INS Daemon Log, and the INS SNMP Alarms and Traps.

Appendix D Call Detail Records

Provides information about the format and content of the Call Detail Records (CDRs) that are kept for each dial-up and dial-backup call. It also includes information about the DAS-applicable Failure/Error Cause Codes which are included in some CDRs.

Appendix E Upgrading DAS Server Shelf Software

Provides procedures for reinstalling DAS Server Shelf and DAS Daemon software.

Appendix F Dial-Up Frame Relay Terminology

Provides definitions of some terms that have specific meaning for the DAS Server Shelf and the Dial-Up Frame Relay application.

Related Documentation

The DAS Dial-Up Frame Relay application is compatible with Release 8.1 and Release 8.4 of Cisco StrataCom's StrataView Plus, and the IPX switch, IGX switch, BPX switch, and MGX 8220, switched software. Contact Cisco Customer Service with any questions about switch software and StrataView Plus compatibility with DAS 1.4.

Cisco CD ROM

Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection Family, is updated monthly.
