Because the Dial Access Switching system functions are spread between the DAS hardware (that is, the DAS Server Shelf), the Cisco WAN switching network, and the StrataView Plus Workstation, the following terms need to be defined to avoid confusion:
Cisco WAN switching network is a public or private network built around Cisco wide-area switches. These switches utilize standards-based ATM and Cisco's patented FastPacket technology and are designed to support multiple applications integrating voice, constant and variable-bit rate data, video, frame relay, and ATM services on one multimedia wide area network.
Cisco wide-area switch could be a Cisco StrataCom IPX switch, IPX-AF access feeder, IGX switch, BPX/MGX 8220 switch and edge concentrator. Typically the DAS Server Shelf is co-located with a Cisco wide-area switch (e.g., an IGX switch) and is usually installed in the same rack.
Dial Access Switching (DAS) system provides dial-up and dial-backup Frame Relay services, which are accessed through ISDN calls, for permanent virtual circuits (PVCs) in Cisco WAN switching networks. The Dial Access Switching application is implemented by the DAS Server Shelf and DAS (INS) Dial-Up Frame Relay software.
DAS Dial-Up Frame Relay application is the software that works with the DAS Server Shelf to provide Dial Access Switching. This software is split between the client software running on the DAS Server Shelf and the DAS (INS) Server software (the INS Daemon) running on the StrataView Plus Workstation.
DAS (INS) Daemon software is that portion of the DAS (INS) Dial-Up Frame Relay software that is loaded on the StrataView Plus Workstation and runs in conjunction with StrataView Plus. (The INS Daemon software is also referred to as the DAS Daemon software.)
DAS Server Shelf is a rack-mounted adjunct processor that is normally co-located with a Cisco wide-area switch (e.g., a BPX, IGX, or IPX switch) and has IP connectivity to a StrataView Plus Workstation. DAS Server Shelf will be used in Dial Access Switching documentation to refer only to the hardware, i.e., the rack-mounted box. (The DAS Server Shelf is sometimes referred to as an INS.)
Intelligent Network Server (INS) is the former name for a range of products that added specific capabilities to Cisco WAN switching networks. The Dial Access Switching (DAS) was a product in the INS family. The other INS product was the Voice Network Switching application. (You will occasionally see INS on a product label or on some of the software menus.)
StrataView Plus® Workstation is the network management platform for managing Cisco StrataCom networks. StrataView Plus, the application running on the workstation, provides status information for INS processes, configuration menus for configuring the dial-up and dial-backup PVCs, as well as all the functions and features described in the Cisco StrataView Plus Operations Guide for Release 8.1 or Release 8.4. The StrataView Plus Workstation is referred to as the StrataView Plus Workstation in INS documentation.
