About This Manual

About This Manual

Welcome to the Installation and Operation manual for the Extended Services Processor (ESP) component of the BPX Service Node.

Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection Family, is updated monthly. Therefore, it might be more up to date than printed documentation. For further information about the Cisco CD-ROM package, see the section Cisco CD-ROM.

This preface discusses the following features of this manual:

Objectives

This publication provides an overview of the BPX Service Node with the Extended Services Processor, the ATM and Frame Relay SVC services that it supports, and the Private Network to Network Interface (PNNI) routing. The BPX Service Node is an integrated BPX ATM switch, AXIS interface shelf, and Extended Services Processor (ESP). After providing an overview, this manual will step you through the initial site preparation, installation, and configuration of the ESP and ATM and Frame Relay SVC services.

Audience

This publication is designed for the person installing the ESP in the BPX Service Node. The installer should be familiar with electronic circuitry and wiring practices and have experience as an electronic or electromechanical technician. It is also intended for the network administrator who will configure the ESP and provision the network to support ATM or Frame Relay SVCs. Both the installer and network administrator should be familiar with the Cisco StrataCom BPX switch, AXIS interface shelf, and the Cisco StrataView Plus Network Management System.

Organization

This document contains the following chapters:

Chapter 1

BPX Service Node with the ESP and PNNI Routing

This chapter introduces the Cisco StrataCom BPX Service Node and the Extended Services Processor.

Chapter 2

ATM Switched Virtual Circuits

This chapter discusses ATM Switched Virtual Circuits as they are implemented by the Cisco StrataCom BPX Service Node.

Chapter 3

Frame Relay Switched Virtual Circuits

This chapter discusses Frame Relay Switched Virtual Circuits as they are implemented by the Cisco StrataCom BPX Service Node.

Chapter 4

ATM Routing

This chapter discusses the Private Network to Network Interface (PNNI) and Interim Inter-switch Signaling Protocol (IISP) routing techniques as they are implemented by the Cisco StrataCom BPX Service Node.

Chapter 5

Physical Installation of ESP

This chapter describes how to unpack, rack-mount, and connect power to the Extended Services Processor (ESP).

Chapter 6

Interface Connections

This chapter describes how to connect the ESP physical interfaces to a terminal, a BPX/AXIS switch, and a StrataView Plus Workstation.

Chapter 7

Understanding the ESP Configuration Interface

This chapter describes the ESP Configuration Interface, the primary tool used to configure a BPX Service Node for ATM and Frame Relay SVCs.

Chapter 8

Operation and Maintenance

This chapter describes the initial configuration of a BPX Service Node for ATM and Frame Relay SVCs. This includes resource partitioning between SVCs and PVCs, using the ESP Configuration Interface, and PNNI or IISP provisioning. In addition, this chapter describes typical network operation and network management tasks.

Appendix A

Troubleshooting

This appendix provides general guidelines for trouble shooting SVC related problems.

Appendix B

Cable Information

This appendix provides AC power and null modem cable information for the ESP.

Appendix C

Billing Architecture and Call Detail Records

This appendix provides information about the Service Node's billing system architecture and the format and content of the Call Detail Records (CDRs) collected by the ESP for each SVC call.

Appendix D

Specifications and Compliance

This appendix lists the applicable Service Node and ESP specifications, along with the Compliance to Standards table.

Appendix E

Terminology

This appendix defines some terms that are relevant to the Cisco StrataCom Service Node.

Appendix F

Upgrading ESP Software

This appendix describes a procedure for loading new ESP software from the StrataView Plus Workstation to the ESP.

Appendix G

Modem Support

This appendix describes connecting a modem for dial-in support to the ESP.

Appendix H

ESP Tools

This appendix describes the ESP tools provided along with the ESP software.

Related Documentation

The following Cisco StrataCom publications contain information that is necessary for the complete understanding, installation, and operation of an BPX Service Node:

Cisco CD-ROM

Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with your product. To order additional copies of the Documentation CD-ROM, contact your local sales representative or call customer service. The CD-ROM package is available as a single package or as an annual subscription. You can also access Cisco documentation on the World Wide Web at http://www.cisco.com, http://www-china.cisco.com, or http://www-europe.cisco.com.

The BPX Service Node is compatible with the Release 8.4.x of StrataView Plus, and the BPX/AXIS switch software. Cisco's Product Support can tell you which current sub-release of 8.4, such as 8.4.x, works best with your network.

Conventions

This publication uses the following conventions to convey instructions and information.

Command descriptions use these conventions:

Examples use these conventions:

Note Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to materials not contained in this manual.
Caution Means reader be careful. In this situation, you might do something that could result in equipment damage or loss of data.
Warning This warning symbol means danger. You are in a situation that could cause bodily injury. Before you work on any equipment, you must be aware of the hazards involved with electrical circuitry and be familiar with standard practices for preventing accidents.
