The BPX Service Node with the Extended Services Processor (ESP) provides new features to traditional Cisco StrataCom ATM networks. To avoid confusion, some of the terms and acronyms that have been used in this manual to describe the BPX Service Node and its features are collected and defined here. This list does not include standard terms that can be found in the Cisco Systems Internetworking Terms and Acronyms or the glossary of the Cisco StrataCom System Overview.
ACR is Available Cell Rate.
AFI is Authority and Format Identifier.
ASI is ATM Service Interface.
ATM network is a traditional Cisco-StrataCom ATM network built around BPX switches.
ATM Network Interface Card (ATM NIC) is the ESP card that is used as the OC-3 interface to the BPX's BXM.
AW is Administrative Weight.
BNI is Broadband Network Interface.
BNM is Broadband Network Module.
BPX Service Node is a closely integrated BPX switch, AXIS interface shelf, and Extended Services Processor designed to support ATM and Frame Relay Switched Virtual Circuits as well as traditional private virtual circuits (PVCs).
CAC is Connection Admission Control.
CDR is Call Detail Record.
Cisco StrataCom network is a public or private network built around Cisco StrataCom cell-switching nodes. These nodes utilize Cisco StrataCom patented FastPacket technology and/or standards-based Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) and are designed to support multiple applications integrating voice, constant and variable-bit rate data, video, frame relay, and ATM services on one multimedia wide area network.
CPE is Customer Premise Equipment.
Extended Services Processor (ESP) is the rack-mounted adjunct processor that is co-located with a Cisco-StrataCom BPX/AXIS (all three units comprise a BPX Service Node) and has IP connectivity to a StrataView Plus Workstation.
GCAC is Generic CAC.
Interim Local Management Interface (ILMI) is used by the BPX Service Node for the ATM address registration across the ATM or Frame Relay UNIs.
Interim Inter-switch Signaling Protocol (IISP) is a static routing protocol defined by the ATM Forum while PNNI was being finalized.
LCN is Logical Channel Number, an internal resource used within the BPX Service Node.
Network to Network Interface (NNI) is the trunk between BPX Service Nodes or between a BPX Service Node and a foreign switch or network.
NSAP is Network Service Access Point.
Private Network to Network Protocol (PNNI) is scalable routing protocol defined by the ATM Forum for virtual circuit routing, as well as a signaling protocol between ATM switches.
PTSE is PNNI Topology State Element.
PTSP is PNNI Topology State Packet.
QoS is Quality of Service.
StrataView Plus Workstation is the network management platform for managing Cisco StrataCom networks. StrataView Plus is the application software running on the workstation. StrataView Plus
Switched Virtual Circuits (SVCs) are virtual circuits that are established on demand and torn down when transmission is complete. ATM or Frame Relay SVCs can be established over a Cisco StrataCom BPX Service Node network through standardized signaling between CPE and the Service Node.
UNI port is the User-to-Network Interface (UNI) where the ATM or Frame Relay CPE connects to a Cisco StrataCom ATM network. This is typically an AXIS ATM UNI Service Module (AUSM) or Frame Relay Service Module (FRSM), or BPX ATM Service Interface (ASI) or BPX BXM. BPX Service Node UNI ports support standard signaling protocols for the establishment of ATM or Frame Relay SVCs.
UPC is Usage Parameter Control.
