This chapter discusses the objectives, audience, organization, and conventions of the Catalyst 1200 Installation and Configuration Guide.
The Catalyst 1200 Installation and Configuration Guide is designed to help you install, configure, and manage the Catalyst 1200 switch. It also covers selected maintenance procedures.
This publication is designed for installers who are familiar with electronic circuitry and wiring practices and have experience as electronic or electromechanical technicians. Users of this guide might also include network administrators and anyone interested in or responsible for setting up and maintaining Catalyst 1200 switches.
For detailed information about the Catalyst switch technology, refer to the Catalyst Switch Self-Study Guide.
Following are the chapters and appendixes included in this publication:
- Chapter 1, "Product Overview," discusses features of the switch and lists LED indications, interface options, and specifications.
- Chapter 2, "Preparing for Installation," describes the prerequisites necessary to install the switch, including safety, cabling, tools, and materials.
- Chapter 3, "Hardware Installation," provides a hardware installation overview and includes the procedures required to install the switch hardware.
- Chapter 4, "Connecting to the Network," discusses the requirements for attaching all the cabling between the switch and the network, and checking the installation and applying power.
- Chapter 5, "Configuring the System," describes the initial configuration procedures and the most common commands that configure the switch for baud rate, Internet Protocol (IP) address, Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) management, Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP), password designation, and testing.
- Chapter 6, "Feature Configuration," describes feature enhancements to the Catalyst 1200 switch.
- Appendix A, "Wiring Specifications," provides cable and interface pinouts for all the cable connections on the switch.
- Appendix B, "Updating Software," describes the procedures required to download software upgrades to the switch.
- Appendix C, "Command Reference," provides an alphabetical list of all commands associated with the switch. Each command is indexed and cross-referenced, and screen displays and field descriptions are provided where appropriate. Use this appendix as a reference for all software commands.
- Appendix D, "Supported Protocols and MIBs," lists the internetworking protocols and Management Information Bases (MIBs) supported by the Catalyst 1200 switch.
- Appendix E, "Workgroup MIB Reference," describes the Cisco Workgroup Management Information Base (MIB) used with the Catalyst 1200 switch.
- Appendix F, "Diagnostic Error Codes," describes the causes of diagnostic error code numbers.
- Appendix G, "Software Release Summary," describes changes made to previously released versions of the Catalyst 1200 switch software.
- Appendix H, "Translated Safety Warnings," provides foreign language translations of each safety warning that appears in this guide.
This publication uses the following conventions to convey instructions and information:
Command descriptions use these conventions:
- Commands and keywords are in boldface font.
- Arguments for which you supply values are shown in italics.
- Elements in square brackets ([ ]) are optional.
- Alternative or optional keywords are shown in bold and grouped in square brackets ([ ]) and separated by a vertical bar ( | ).
- Required keywords in screen displays are grouped in angle brackets (< >) and separated by a vertical bar ( | ).
Examples use these conventions:
- Terminal sessions and system displays are in
screen
font.
- Information you enter is in
boldface screen
font.
Notes, cautions, and warnings use the following conventions and symbols:
Note Means
reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to materials not contained in this manual.
| Caution Means reader be careful. In this situation, you might do something that could result in equipment damage or loss of data. |
| Warning This warning symbol means danger. You are in a situation that could cause bodily injury. Before you work on any equipment, be aware of the hazards involved with electrical circuitry and be familiar with standard practices for preventing accidents. The warning symbol also means that you can see the warning in multiple languages in "Translated Safety Warnings." |
