This chapter provides instructions on basic configuration tasks that you must perform to initialize the SwitchProbe device before you connect it to the network segment.
A SwitchProbe device communicates with the TrafficDirector application using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) commands. To establish SNMP communication with the TrafficDirector application, you must assign the following configuration information to the SwitchProbe management interface:
You can set this basic configuration information in the SwitchProbe device in one of the following ways:
Caution To prevent damage to the SwitchProbe device, see "Site Requirements." |
The following sections contain more information about initializing SwitchProbe devices:
When you first install a SwitchProbe device, the agent starts running with no further action required by you. However, you might want to initialize certain parameters before proceeding further. To do so, you use the Agent Configuration Utility.
The Agent Configuration Utility is a menu-driven configuration console that lets you configure options and customize the SwitchProbe device to monitor and gather data. You can use the following two methods to access the configuration utility:
After you access the agent console, the Agent Configuration Utility main menu is displayed. The main menu consists of two displays.
The following example shows the first page of the menu items that is displayed after initial access (whether you connect locally or remotely).
To select a menu item, enter the corresponding number and press Enter.

If one is available, you can configure a BOOTP server to assign the SwitchProbe device an IP address, net mask, default gateway address, and default server address; you might not have to perform any configuration tasks before connecting the device to the network.
If a BOOTP server is configured to assign the agent an IP address, net mask, and gateway address, configuration is automatic. After unpacking the unit, you can immediately connect it to the network and power it up.
For Token Ring and WAN SwitchProbe devices, configuration is automatic if the following conditions exist:
Before connecting the management interface to the network, make the following configuration changes to the SwitchProbe device:
Before connecting the monitor interface to the network, make the following configuration changes to the SwitchProbe device using the console port:
If one is available, you can configure a BOOTP server to house and send (upon request from a SwitchProbe device) basic configuration information (including an IP address, net mask, default gateway address, and default server address) to the management interface.
After you make the necessary connections to the device (by connecting a network segment to the monitor interface, and connecting a management segment to the management interface), and power up the device, the following things happen:
If you must reconfigure the agent because the IP address, net mask, or gateway address has changed, you must invalidate the old IP address to force the agent to send out BOOTP requests.
To invalidate an IP address to reconfigure the agent, follow these steps:
Step 1 To access the Agent Configuration Utility, use the agent console or the TrafficDirector Remote Login application.
Step 2 Enter 11 and press Enter.
The following prompt is displayed:
Enter "quit" to exit command-line mode
%
Step 3 Enter the command set ip_valid no and press Enter.
If the IP address is invalid, the SwitchProbe device sends out BOOTP requests.
Step 4 To quit command-line mode, enter quit (in lowercase letters).
Step 5 To exit the Traffic Director Remote Login application, enter exit (in lowercase letters).
Step 6 To reset the agent, enter 12 and press Enter
The following prompt is displayed:
Selection#: 12
WARNING: agent will be reset, confirm [n] y
Step 7 To confirm, enter y and press Enter.
The agent resets.
You can use an ASCII terminal to manually configure the agent under any of the following conditions:
Before you begin manual configuration, verify that you have the following equipment:
Warning Before working on a system that has an on/off switch, turn OFF the power and unplug the power cord. |
Warning Before working on a chassis or working near power supplies, unplug the power cord on AC units; disconnect the power at the circuit breaker on DC units. |
To connect an ASCII terminal to the SwitchProbe device, follow these steps:
Step 1 Connect one end of an RS-232 null-modem crossover cable (with DB-9 female connector) to the SwitchProbe console port.
Step 2 Connect the other end of the null-modem cable to an ASCII terminal.
If the connector on the cable is not compatible, use an adapter to match the cable and the debug port connector.
Step 3 Ensure that the screws are tight on the adapter, the debug port connector, and the cable.
Step 4 Turn on the data terminal.
Step 5 Set the terminal to the following parameters:
Step 6 Power on the SwitchProbe device.
At power-up, the SwitchProbe device runs a set of self-tests before booting. During normal power-up or reset, you should see the following sequence:
1. All LEDs light at power-up.
2. System diagnostics run for approximately 30 seconds. (A short beep signals when system diagnostics are complete.)
3. The error (red) and network activity (amber) LEDs turn off briefly, then display the agent status.
4. The agent sends status information to the data terminal (if one is connected). Messages similar to the following are displayed:

On Fast Ethernet Half-Duplex SwitchProbe devices, you can configure the Fast Ethernet interface speed to 10 or 100 Mbps (the default).
To change the speed of the Fast Ethernet half-duplex interface, follow these steps:
Step 1 To access the Agent Configuration Utility, use the agent console or the TrafficDirector Remote Login application.
Step 2 Enter 8, select the Fast Ethernet interface, and press Enter.
Step 3 Enter 11 and press Enter.
Step 4 To check the current speed of the Fast Ethernet interface, enter the command
get speed.
Step 5 To reset the speed, enter the command set speed new_speed
where new_speed is 10 or 100 (Mbps)
The speed is set when you reboot or reset the SwitchProbe device. If there is no link (for example, if the cable is not attached), the speed is automatically set to 100 Mbps.
If the SwitchProbe device has a WAN interface, the default encapsulation protocol must match the encapsulation protocol of the network to which you connect the device. If it does not match, you must change the default encapsulation protocol.
To change the default encapsulation protocol, follow these steps:
Step 1 To access the Agent Configuration Utility, use the agent console or the TrafficDirector Remote Login application.
