Working with TrueView

Working with TrueView

This chapter describes the TrueView window and the TrueView toolbar, and describes how to organize devices on the network using group folders.

The TrueView Window

TrueView displays a window containing icons that represent devices on the network. You can launch the management application for a device by double-clicking on the icon corresponding to the device.

Figure 4-1: TrueView Window

TrueView enables you to simplify network management by arranging the devices that are discovered on the network into group folders of your choice. When you use TrueView for the first time, automatically discovered icons are displayed in the Discovery group folder.

Customizing TrueView

You can customize TrueView for your own needs by setting preferences and turning the toolbar and status bar on or off.

Setting the Preferences

You can determine whether TrueView terminates if you shut down Windows whilst TrueView is running, and whether a clock is displayed on the status bar.

You can also set up a background bitmap for the TrueView window. For information about setting up a background bitmap, see "Changing the Background in the TrueView Window" in Chapter 3, "Using TrueView Applications".

To change the preferences:

Step 1 Click on the Preferences command on the File menu.

The Preferences dialog box is displayed.

Step 2 Set the preferences you require.

If a check box is crossed then the preference is selected.

Step 3 Click on the OK button to confirm the changes.

Showing and Hiding the Toolbar

When you first use TrueView, the toolbar is displayed. The toolbar provides quick access to TrueView commands that can also be accessed from the menus.

Note You can right-click on a button in the toolbar to display a popup window that describes what the button does.

To show or hide the toolbar:

Step 1 Click on the Edit menu on the menu bar.

If the toolbar is displayed in the TrueView window, a tick mark appears next to the Toolbar command on the Edit menu.

Step 2 Click on the Toolbar command to toggle the toolbar on and off.

Showing and Hiding the Status Bar

The status bar contains information about the number of devices in the group folder, the number and type of devices that are selected, and the current time. You can enable or disable the time display (see "Setting the Preferences" earlier in this chapter).

To show or hide the status bar:

Step 1 Click on the Edit menu on the menu bar.

If the status bar is displayed in the TrueView window, a tick mark appears next to the Status bar command on the Edit menu. If the status bar is removed from the TrueView window, no tick appears next to the Status bar command.

Step 2 Click on the Status bar command to toggle the toolbar on and off.

Working with Group Folders

TrueView supports a maximum of 32 group folders, including the Discovery group folder. You can use group folders to organize and manage the devices on the network. For example, you can organize your icons by location and move icons from the Discovery group folder to another folder that identifies the location of the device. Any combination of icons can be placed in the same folder.

When you use TrueView for the first time, all discovered icons are displayed in the Discovery group folder. This is where newly discovered icons are always placed.

Note The Discovery group folder cannot be deleted.

Creating a Group Folder

TrueView supports a maximum of 32 group folders, including the Discovery group folder. Any combination of icons can be placed in the same folder.

Note No two group folders can have the same name.

To create a new group folder:

Step 1 Click on the New command on the File menu, or click on the Create folder button on the toolbar.

The Create Group dialog box is displayed.

Step 2 Enter the name of the new group folder.

Step 3 Click on the OK button.

Opening a Group Folder

When group folders are closed they appear as 'minimised' icons at the bottom of the TrueView window. The color of the icon reflects the most severe status of a device within the folder (see "Understanding the Color of Icons" in Chapter 6, "Working with Icons").

To open a closed group folder:

Step 1 Click on the icon for the group folder you wish to open.

Step 2 Double-click on the icon, click on the Open command on the File menu, or click on the Open Folder button on the TrueView toolbar.

Deleting a Group Folder

You can delete any empty group folder in the TrueView window except the Discovery group folder. You cannot delete group folders that contain icons.

Note The Discovery group folder cannot be deleted.

To remove a group folder:

Step 1 Select the group folder you wish to delete.

Step 2 Press the Delete key on the keyboard, click on the Delete command on the File menu, or click on the Delete Folder button on the TrueView toolbar.

Step 3 Click on the OK button to confirm that you want to remove the group folder.

Renaming a Group Folder

You can rename any empty group folder in the TrueView window. However, no two group folders can have the same name.

Note The discovery folder can be renamed, but it will remain the folder where all discovered icons are placed.

To rename a group folder:

Step 1 Select the group folder you wish to rename.

Step 2 Click on the Rename command on the File menu, or click on the Rename Folder button on the toolbar.

The Rename Group dialog box is displayed.

Step 3 Enter the new name for the selected group folder.

Step 4 Click on the OK button.
