Working with Icons

Working with Icons

This chapter provides information about working with icons in TrueView.

Showing Devices as Icons

You can show or hide the icons that represent devices discovered by a TrueView management application. When the icons are hidden, you can still use the Table dialog box for the management application (see Chapter 7, "Working with Tables"), to view a list of devices that have been discovered automatically or added by the user. For information about auto discovery, see "Adding Devices Using Auto Discovery" in Chapter 3, "Using TrueView Applications".

Note For more information about how icons are displayed, refer to the documentation supplied with the TrueView application.

To show or hide icons in a TrueView window:

Step 1 Click on the Options command on the menu corresponding to the type of icons you want to show or hide.

The Options dialog box is displayed.

Step 2 Click on the Show icon.

Step 3 To show icons, enable the Show icon check box.

Step 4 Click on the OK button.

Note Hidden icons for a device type are removed from all group folders. When you show the hidden icons again, they appear in the Discovery group folder.

Understanding the Color of Icons

TrueView uses the background color of the icon to indicate the status of the device. The color of a minimized group folder indicates the most severe status of a device in the folder.

The five possible colors are described in Table 6-1.

Table  6-1: Icon Colors
Color Description
Red There is something seriously wrong with the device. Red is the most severe status for a device.
Yellow There is a possible fault with the device.
Magenta The device is on the network but TrueView does not have a link to it.
White The device is on the network. The corresponding TrueView Manager has a link to it, and there are no problems.
Blue The device has not been seen on the network since you started the corresponding TrueView management application.

To display the Icon Color Legend in TrueView, click on the Icon Colors command in the Help menu. The Icon Color Legend is displayed.

To remove the Icon Color legend:

Step 1 Select the Icon Color legend dialog box.

Step 2 Press the Alt key and F4 keys on the keyboard together.

Selecting Icons

You can either select a single icon or select a group of icons that are in the same folder or window.

To select an icon, click on an icon in the group folder. The selected icon is highlighted. When an icon is selected, the label of the icon is highlighted.

Note You cannot select a group of icons that require different management applications.

Selecting Non-consecutive Icons

To select a group of non-consecutive icons:

Step 1 Click on an icon.

Step 2 To select more icons, press and hold the Shift or Ctrl key and click on other icons. When you have finished selecting icons, release the Shift or Ctrl key.

All the selected icons are highlighted.

Selecting Consecutive Icons

To select consecutive device icons:

Step 1 Place the mouse pointer on an area outside the group of icons to be selected.

The mouse pointer changes from an arrow to a cross.

Step 2 Press and hold the left mouse button.

Step 3 Drag the mouse pointer to make a box over the icons to be selected, to an area outside the group of icons you want to select.

Step 4 Release the left mouse button.

All the selected icons are highlighted, including those icons that were only partially inside the box.

Selecting all Icons in a Group Folder

You can select all devices of the same type in a group folder.

To select all like device icons in a group folder:

Step 1 Select the device icon in a group folder.

Step 2 Click on the Select all command on the Edit menu.

Icons of the same type as the selected device are all selected.

Inverting the Selection of Icons in a Group Folder

You can invert your selection of icons in a group folder for other like icons.

For example, if there are five Catalyst 1600 icons in the group folder and you have selected two of the Catalyst 1600s, use the Invert selection command to select the other three Catalyst 1600 icons in the group folder. The previously two selected Catalyst 1600 icons will no longer be selected.

To invert the selection of all like devices in a group folder:

Step 1 Select the device icons.

Step 2 Click on the Invert selection command on the Edit menu.

Devices of the same type as the previously selected icon will be selected in the group folder, and all previously selected devices will no longer be selected.

Refreshing the Status of Icons Manually

You can refresh manually the status of icons in a selected group folder.

To refresh icons in a selected group folder:

Step 1 Select the group folder where the status of icons is to be refreshed manually.

Step 2 Click on the Refresh command on the Edit menu.

The status of the device icons in the selected group folder is refreshed.

Moving Icons

You can move icons from one group folder to another group folder. Once icons are moved from the Discovery group folder they will not be discovered again.

To move icons from one group folder to another:

Either

Step 1 Select the icon or group of icons that you want to move.

All the selected icons labels are highlighted.

Step 2 Click on the Move command on the File menu, or click on the Move button on the toolbar.

The Move Device dialog box is displayed.

Step 3 Select the name of the group you wish to move from the list displayed, or type the name in the text box.

Step 4 Click on the OK button.

Or

Step 1 Select the icon or group of icons that you want to move.

All the selected icons labels are highlighted.

Step 2 Drag the selected icons from the current group folder to the new group folder.

Deleting an Icon or a Group Folder

You can delete icons that represent devices, or remove an empty group folder.

Deleting an icon automatically removes the corresponding table entry for that device in the device table. If Auto discovery is enabled and the device that the icon represents is still on the network then the icon will be discovered and placed in the Discovery group folder.

Note You cannot delete the icon that represents TrueView Alert Manager or the Discovery group folder. Group folders can only be deleted if they do not contain any device icons.

When you delete a group of icons, a warning is displayed and you must confirm that you want to perform the operation before the icons are deleted from the group folder. When you delete a single icon, no warning is displayed and no confirmation is requested.

To delete an icon or a group of icons, in TrueView:

Step 1 Select an icon or a group of icons, that are to be deleted from the group folder.

All the selected icons are highlighted.

Step 2 Use one of the following methods:

Copying Icon Information

You can copy information about the IP address and the type of device, from a selected icon or a number of icons, to the clipboard. For example, if you select a Catalyst 1600 icon on the network, the name and type of device are copied to the clipboard as ASCII text.

To copy information for selected icons to the clipboard:

Step 1 Select an icon or a group of icons that you wish to copy information from.

All the selected icons are highlighted.

Step 2 Either select the Copy command on the Edit menu, or click on the Copy Information button on the toolbar, to open the folder.

The information about the selected devices is copied to the clipboard.

Labelling Icons

Each icon that represents a device on the network has a label. You can change the type of label that is displayed beneath the icon.

To change the type of label:

Step 1 Click on the menu for the management application icons you want to label.

For example, to label the bridge icons, select Bridge from the menu bar.

Step 2 Click on the Options command.

The Options dialog box is displayed.

Step 3 Select the type of label you want to display from the Option Label window.

For example, if you are labelling Catalyst 1600 icons and you want to display the name of the devices, click on the Device name option button. If you specified a name in the Information window, Catalyst 1600 Manager displays the name of the Catalyst 1600s under their icons.

Step 4 Click on the OK button.

Arranging Icons Automatically

You can automatically arrange the icons in a group folder by setting the Auto Arrange command for a group folder or as required.

Note The Auto Arrange command uses the last sort type that was used in the selected group folder. You can sort by device type, device status, or device name. See "Sorting Devices in a Group Folder" later in this chapter for more information.

To automatically arrange the icons for a group folder:

Step 1 Select the group folder in which you want to automatically arrange the icons.

Step 2 Click on the Arrange Icons command on the View menu.

If the Auto Arrangement command has a tick mark, icons are arranged automatically. If the command does not have a tick mark, icons are only arranged when you select the Arrange Icons command.

Changing the Size of Icons

You can display device icons as large or small icons in different group folders. Icons are arranged according to the last sort type applied to the group folder. If no sort has been used, the icons are alphanumerically sorted by default.

You can sort by device type, device status, or device name. For more information about sorting, see "Sorting Devices in a Group Folder" earlier in this chapter. All group folders can be set up independently to display different types of icon.

Note When the size of icons is changed from small icons to large icons and the Auto Arrange command is disabled for the folder then the icons may overlap. If you choose to automatically arrange icons and no sort type has been applied to the group folder previously then the icons are sorted by device name.

To make all icons in a group folder larger:

Step 1 Select the group folder.

Step 2 Either select the Large icon command on the View menu, or click on the Large Icons button on the toolbar.
