Using TrueView Applications

Using TrueView Applications

This chapter describes how to start TrueView applications and discover devices on the network.

Starting Applications for TrueView

Before starting TrueView applications for the first time, always check the README files that are supplied on the installation disks. The files contain information that was not available at the time of publication.

To start applications for TrueView:

Step 1 In Program Manager, double-click on the TrueView icon (see Figure 3-1).

Figure 3-1: TrueView Icon

The TrueView window is displayed. If a TrueView application is included in TrueView (see the section "TrueView Settings" in Chapter 2, "Installing TrueView Applications"), and the Auto discovery feature is turned on (see the section "Adding Devices Using Auto Discovery" later in this chapter), the application discovers devices on the network automatically. Discovered devices are represented by icons in the Discovery group folder in the TrueView window.

Step 2 To manage a device, double-click on the corresponding icon in the Discovery group folder (see Chapter 6, "Working with Icons"), or on the entry in the table for the management application (see Chapter 7, "Working with Tables").

Exiting TrueView Applications

You can close TrueView applications and return to the network management platform, or exit the management platform and return to Program Manager.

To close a TrueView application:

Step 1 Close any open dialog boxes by clicking on the OK button to save changes that you have made or the Cancel button to discard the changes.

Step 2 Click on the Close button to close the TrueView application.

To exit TrueView:

Step 1 Click on the TrueView menu on the menu bar.

Step 2 Click on the Exit command to exit TrueView.

Getting Help

You can display a contents page listing the help topics that are available or get context-sensitive help by clicking on the Help button in a TrueView application dialog box.

For information about TrueView, click on the Help button on the TrueView toolbar.

For information about a management application:

Step 1 Click on the Help menu on the menu bar of the TrueView window.

Step 2 Click on the Managers submenu on the TrueView menu.

Step 3 Click on the command for the management application. For example, to get information about TrueView Catalyst 1600 Manager, click on the Catalyst 1600 command.

Adding Devices

You can add devices to the database of a TrueView application by turning on Auto discovery, or specifying the address of each device manually.

Adding Devices Using Auto Discovery

You can specify that the application discovers devices automatically, or you can add them manually in TrueView (see the section "Adding Devices Manually" later in this chapter).

Note Auto discovery only discovers devices on IPX networks. You cannot use Auto discovery to add devices on IP networks.

To turn on Auto discovery in TrueView:

Step 1 Click on the Options command on the menu corresponding to the management application you want to work with.

The Options dialog box is displayed.

Step 2 Click on the Auto discovery check box so that a cross appears in the box.

Step 3 Click on the OK button.

When devices are added to the database by Auto discovery, the icons representing the devices appear in the Discovery group folder.

Adding Devices Manually

In TrueView, you can specify that the application discovers devices automatically (see the section "Adding Devices Using Auto Discovery" earlier in this chapter), or you can add them manually.

To add a devices to TrueView:

Step 1 Click on the New command on the menu corresponding to the device you want to add. For example, to add a Catalyst 1600 device, click on the New command on the Catalyst 1600 menu.

Step 2 Enter the information required by the dialog box. For example, to add a new Catalyst 1600 specify either the IP address, or the IPX address and network number.

Step 3 Click on the OK button.

Changing the Background

You can select a bitmap file to be displayed in the TrueView window and in each separate group folder. For example, you may want to use a map as the background to indicate the geographical location of the devices in a folder.

The first time you choose to display a background bitmap, you must select the file you want to use. The next time you choose to use a background, the previously selected background is displayed in the group folder.

Changing the Background in the TrueView Window

To display, remove, or change the background in the TrueView window:

Step 1 Click on the Preferences command on the File menu.

The Preferences dialog box is displayed.

Step 2 Enter the default path that TrueView uses for background bitmaps in the Default Path field.

Step 3 Enable the Main Window check box to use the bitmap, or disable the check box to remove the bitmap.

When you want to change the background, or when you enable the background for the first time, click on the Browse button and use the Open dialog box to browse for the bitmap you want to use. Select a file and click on the OK button.

Step 4 In the Preferences dialog box, click on the OK button.

Changing the Background in a Group Folder

To display, remove, or change the background in a group folder:

Step 1 Select the group folder you want to change.

Step 2 Click on the Background command on the View menu.

A submenu is displayed. If a background is currently being displayed, a tick mark appears next to the Use command on the submenu. If no background is in use, no tick mark is displayed.

Step 3 Click on the Use command to change the setting, or click on the Change command to select a background bitmap for the group folder.

When you change the background, or when you enable the background for the first time, use the Open dialog box to browse for the bitmap you want to use. Select a file and click on the OK button.
