Preface

This guide is for the networking or computer technician responsible for installing a Catalyst 2955 switch, hereafter referred to as the switch. We assume that you are familiar with the concepts and terminology of Ethernet and local area networking.

Purpose

This guide describes the hardware features of Catalyst 2955 switch. It describes the physical and performance characteristics of the switch, explains how to install a switch, and provides troubleshooting information.

This guide does not describe how to configure software features on your switch or describe the Catalyst 2955-specific system messages that you might encounter. It also does not provide information about command-line interface (CLI) commands that have been created or changed for use by the switch. For more information, refer to the software configuration, the system message, and the command reference guides for the switch.

Organization

"Overview," describes the switch ports, the standards that they support, and the LEDs.

"Installation," contains the procedures for installing a switch on a DIN rail and a 19-inch rack. It also describes how to power on the switch, how to make port connections, and how to wire the relays.

"Installation in a Hazardous Environment," contains the procedures for installing a switch on a DIN rail and a 19-inch rack in a hazardous environment. It also describes how to power on the switch, how to make port connections, and how to wire the relays.

"Troubleshooting," describes how to identify and resolve problems that might arise when you are installing a switch.

"Technical Specifications," lists the physical and environmental specifications and the regulatory agency approvals.

"Connectors and Cables," describes the connectors, cables, and adapters that you use to connect the switch to another device.
