About This Guide

This section discusses the intended audience, scope, and organization of this guide and defines the conventions used to convey instructions and information.

Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in the CD-ROM package that ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection Family, is updated monthly. Therefore, it might be more current than printed documentation. To order additional copies of the Documentation CD-ROM, contact your local sales representative or call customer service. The CD-ROM package is available as a single package or as an annual subscription. You can also access Cisco documentation on the World Wide Web at http://www.cisco.com, http://www-china.cisco.com, or

Audience and Scope

This guide is for users who have some experience installing and maintaining networking hardware. We assume that Cisco 1400 series router users are familiar with the terminology and concepts of local Ethernet and wide-area networking.

This guide describes the functional and physical features of the Cisco 1400 series router and provides installation procedures, troubleshooting information, technical specifications, and cable and connector guidelines and specifications.

Organization

This guide is organized as follows:

• The "Overview" chapter includes an overview of ADSL technology, describes the router front and rear panels, describes the router box contents, and lists some additional equipment that you might need to install the router.

• The "Installation" chapter describes how to install the router by connecting network and power cables and how to verify your installation by checking LEDs.

• The "Software Configuration" chapter describes how to configure the router using the Cisco IOS command-line interface (CLI).

• The "Troubleshooting" chapter describes some problems that you might have with the router and how to isolate and possibly solve these problems.

• The "Technical Specifications" appendix lists the physical characteristics, environmental requirements, and power specifications for the router.

• The "Upgrading DRAM SIMMs" appendix describes how to upgrade DRAM SIMMs in the Cisco 1400 series routers.

• The "Cabling Specifications" appendix lists the physical characteristics of the cables and connectors used with the router.
