Introduction

TrueView Catalyst 1600 Manager is a Token Ring network management application that enables you to monitor and control the Catalyst 1600 Token Ring switch using the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).

This guide explains how to use Catalyst 1600 Manager to manage the Catalyst 1600 Token Ring switch. For information about installing and configuring Catalyst 1600 Manager, starting and exiting the application and working with icons and tables, refer to the TrueView Applications Installation and User Guide.

About TrueView

TrueView is a network management platform that enables you to simplify network management by arranging the devices that are discovered on the network into group folders. You can use TrueView to configure the network management station, launch management applications for discovered devices, and take advantage of a range of network management tools such as Ping, BOOTP, and Download Monitor.

The management features provided by TrueView depend upon the management applications that you have installed. To manage a particular type of device on the network, install the management application associated with that device. For example, if you have installed TrueView Catalyst 1600 Manager, you can configure timed downloads to Catalyst 1600s on the network.

To configure events and manage alerts on the network, use TrueView Alert Manager, which is supplied with TrueView. TrueView Alert Manager enables you to configure alerts supported by the management applications that are installed. For example, when you install TrueView Catalyst 1600 Manager, TrueView Alert Manager enables you to configure alerts for events associated with Catalyst 1600s on the network.

About TrueView Catalyst 1600 Manager

TrueView Catalyst 1600 Manager is a network management application that enables you to manage the Catalyst 1600 Token Ring switch and configure virtual local-area networks (VLANs).

TrueView Catalyst 1600 Manager enables you to:

• Manage a Catalyst 1600 on the network using the SNMP management protocol over IPX or IP.

• Autodiscover devices on IPX networks.

• View the front panel of the Catalyst 1600, including the LEDs and liquid crystal display (LCD), from the TrueView management station.

• Assign a locally administered address (LAA) to each port, or assign an IP address and subnet mask to the Catalyst 1600.

• Configure source routing and Spanning Tree parameters that affect the Catalyst 1600 and ports on the Catalyst 1600.

• Implement simple network management protocol (SNMP) security by authorizing managers and trap destinations.

• Reset the Catalyst 1600 and erase the stored configuration, boot code, or microcode.

• Download boot code or microcode to the Catalyst 1600.

• Control the forwarding of broadcast packets, and create and edit virtual LANs to define a logical network structure independent of the physical layout. For information about virtual LANs, see Appendix B, "Controlling Broadcast Frames with Virtual LANs."
