Initialization

Initialization

This chapter provides instructions on basic configuration tasks that you must perform to initialize the SwitchProbe device before you connect it to the network segment.

A SwitchProbe device communicates with the TrafficDirector application using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) commands. To facilitate SNMP communication with the TrafficDirector application, you must assign the following configuration information to the SwitchProbe device's management interface:

You can set this basic configuration information in the SwitchProbe device in one of the following ways:

When you first install a SwitchProbe device, the agent starts running with no further action required by you. However, you might want to initialize certain parameters before proceeding further. To do so, you use the Agent Configuration Utility.

Caution To prevent damage to the SwitchProbe device, read "Site Requirements."

Note To prevent network interruptions, configure all Token Ring interfaces to the correct speed before you connect the device to the network segment.

Agent Configuration Utility

The Agent Configuration Utility is a menu-driven configuration console that allows you to configure options and customize the SwitchProbe device to monitor and gather data. You can use the following two methods to access the configuration utility:

Understanding Console Menus

After you access the agent console, the Agent Configuration Utility main menu is displayed. The main menu consists of two displays. The following example shows the first page of the menu items you see after initial access (whether you connect locally or remotely). You select a menu item by entering the corresponding number and pressing Enter.

Determining Configuration Tasks

Note To determine if your application requires special configuration, read this section carefully.

If you have a BOOTP server available, you can configure the server to assign the SwitchProbe device with the IP address, net mask, default gateway address, and default server address; you might not have to perform any configuration tasks before connecting the SwitchProbe device to the network.

If there is a BOOTP server configured to assign the device agent an IP address, net mask, and gateway address, configuration is automatic. After unpacking the unit, you can immediately connect it to the network and turn it on.

For Token Ring and WAN SwitchProbe devices, configuration is automatic if the following conditions exist:

If all of these criteria are not met, you must configure either the management interface or the monitor interface before connecting the SwitchProbe device to the network.

Configuring the Management Interface

Before connecting the management interface to the network, make the following configuration changes to the SwitchProbe device:

Configuring the Monitor Interface

Before connecting the monitor interface to the network, make the following configuration changes to the SwitchProbe device using the console port:

Note The SwitchProbe device saves
configuration parameters in memory even when you switch the power off. You must configure the device only when you are installing it for the first time, or when you need to reconfigure the system.

Automatic Configuration Using a BOOTP Server

If you have a BOOTP server, you can configure that server to house and send (upon request from a SwitchProbe device) basic configuration information (including an IP address, net mask, default gateway address, and default server address) to the device's management interface.

After you make the necessary connections to the device (connecting a network segment to the monitor interface, and connecting a management segment to the management interface), and turn on the device, you will see the following:

If you change the initialization information in a BOOTP server and want to reinitialize the device, you must first invalidate the existing IP address. See the next section, "Invalidating an IP Address," then the next topic in this list.
If you have configured a BOOTP server to contain configuration information for the requesting SwitchProbe device, that information will automatically download to the management interface.
If a BOOTP server does not contain configuration information for the requesting SwitchProbe device, or if a BOOTP server is not present on the network, you must manually configure the SwitchProbe device using an ASCII terminal.

Note Token Ring SwitchProbe device interfaces have a
default ring speed of 16 Mbps. If connecting to a 4-Mbps ring, you must change the speed parameter before connecting the unit, or it the ring might beacon.

If you need to reconfigure the agent because the IP address, net mask, or gateway address has changed, you must invalidate the old IP address to force the agent to send out BOOTP requests.

Invalidating an IP Address

To invalidate an IP address to reconfigure the agent, follow these steps:

Step 1   Access the Agent Configuration Utility by using the agent console or the TrafficDirector Remote Login application.

Step 2   Enter 11 and press Enter.

The following prompt is displayed:

Selection #: 11 Enter "quit" to exit command-line mode %

Step 3   Enter the string set ip_valid no and press Enter.

If the IP address is invalid, the SwitchProbe device sends out BOOTP requests.

Step 4   Enter quit (in lowercase) to quit command-line mode.

Step 5   Enter exit (in lowercase) to exit the Remote Login application.

Step 6   Enter 12 and press Enter to reset the agent.

The following prompt is displayed:

Selection#: 12 WARNING: agent will be reset, confirm [n] y

Step 7   Enter y to confirm, and press Enter.

The agent resets.

You do not have to reset the agent after each setting change, but the settings do not take effect until you reset the agent.

Manual Configuration Using an ASCII Terminal

Use an ASCII terminal to manually configure the agent under any of the following conditions:

Before you begin manual configuration, verify that you have the following equipment:

Before connecting the ASCII terminal to the SwitchProbe device's console port, power off the device. (The power LED on the front panel should be off.) Verify that the device is not connected to the network.

Warning Before working on a system that has an on/off switch, turn OFF the power and unplug the power cord.
Warning Before working on a chassis or working near power supplies, unplug the power cord on AC units; disconnect the power at the circuit breaker on DC units.

Note To see the warnings in multiple languages, see "Translated Safety Warnings."

Connecting the Device to an ASCII Terminal

To connect an ASCII terminal to the SwitchProbe device, follow these steps:

Step 1   Connect one end of an RS-232 null-modem crossover cable (with DB-9 female connector) to the SwitchProbe device's console port.

Step 2   Connect the other end of the null-modem cable to an ASCII terminal.

If the connector on the cable is not compatible, use an adapter to match the cable and the debug port connector.

Step 3   Ensure that the screws are tight on both the adapter, the debug port connector, and the cable.

Step 4   Turn on the data terminal.

Step 5   Set the terminal to the following parameters:

Step 6   Power on the SwitchProbe device.

Power-Up Sequence

At power-up, the SwitchProbe device performs a set of self-tests before booting. During normal power-up or reset, you should see the following sequence:

Note If the
error and network activity LEDs do not turn off briefly, there might be a hardware problem with the device. For further assistance, contact Cisco Systems' technical support.
