Installing the Y2K Compliance Assessment Tool

Installing the Y2K Compliance Assessment Tool

TheY2K Compliance Assessment Tool is a set of web-based tools integrated into a network desktop. It includes a web-server component, web-based tools, and web browser capability. The kit is based on a client/server network architecture that connects multiple web-based clients to a network server. The Y2K Compliance Assessment Tool helps to discover Cisco devices in your network and provides inventory tools that help you analyze whether your network is year 2000 compliant.

This chapter consists of the following sections:

Preparing To Install

Before you install the Y2K Compliance Assessment Tool, make sure your server and client environments meet the hardware and software requirements described in the following sections:

Installation Notes

Installing theY2K Compliance Assessment Tool is a multistep process that must be performed in specific order. Depending on your system requirements, installing the software prerequisites might require three or more Microsoft software application installations, in addition to your specified options.

Caution The order in which you install the software is crucial to the successful installation of the Y2K Compliance Assessment Tool. You must install the software in the order specified, or you could disable your system.

Server Requirements

Ensure that your server meets the following hardware and software requirements, and software installation requirements.

Note The hardware and software version information is subject to change, based on enhancements made to theY2K Compliance Assessment Tool. For the most current version information, refer to the "Release Notes" chapter.

Hardware and Software Requirements

For the server hardware and software system requirements of the Y2K Compliance Assessment Tool, refer to the "System Requirements" section.

Installing Required Server Software Overview

This section describes the software that is required on the Windows NT system before you can install the Y2K Compliance Assessment Tool.

The following components of the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack must be installed on the system prior to the Y2K Compliance Assessment Tool installation:

Several Microsoft software packages must be installed on the system before you can install the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.

The major steps required to install the required server software are as follows:

    1. Verify that the system has Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 US English or Japanese version or Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 US English or Japanese version installed, and install one of them if none are installed.

    2. Verify that Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 or Service Pack 4 is installed, and install it if it is not installed.

    3. Verify that Internet Explorer 4.0 with Service Pack 1 is installed, and install it if it is not installed.

    4. Verify that the required components of Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack are installed, and install them if they are not installed.

Note The download and installation programs for these required software packages are sensitive to your system configuration and are subject to change by Microsoft at any time. For these reasons, it is not possible to provide exact, step-by-step instructions for the installation of the required Microsoft software.
Caution If you are not familiar with installing the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack, refer to the "Running the Installation Program" section and to the Microsoft Web site (www.microsoft.com) for additional information. If you install the required software incorrectly you will not be able to successfully install theY2K Compliance Assessment Tool.

Key Points in the Installation Process

These are the key points to remember when installing the required server software:

Sample Procedure

Caution This sample procedure was accurate when this document was published. However, the procedure for installing the required Microsoft software is determined by Microsoft. It has changed in the past, and it may change again at any time. This sample procedure is provided here purely for reference.

This sample procedure includes steps to determine if the required software is already installed, and steps to install it if it is not already installed. The full procedure can take over an hour to complete and can involve the download of approximately 100 MB of software, depending on the software that is already installed on your system.

Some of the options in this procedure differ slightly between Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0. In these cases, the following indicators are used:

To install the required server software on your Windows NT system, start with Windows NT Workstation 4.0 or Windows NT Server 4.0 installed on your system, and then follow these steps:

Step 1 Verify that Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 is installed.

You can download the Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 or 4 from the URL http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/.

Step 2 Verify or install (if necessary ) Internet Explorer 4.01 with Service Pack 1 (IE 4.0 SP1).

You can download Internet Explorer 4.0 with Service Pack 1 from the URL http://www.microsoft.com/ie/download/.

Step 3 Verify that the required Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack components are installed.

If all required components are installed, your server is ready to run the installation program. Skip Step 5 and refer to the "Running the Installation Program" section.

If any of the required components are not installed, you must install the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack. Refer to Step 5.

Step 4 Install Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.

You have now finished installing the required server software.

Effects of the Y2K Compliance Assessment Tool on Other Web Sites

The Y2K Compliance Assessment Tool installs a Web site on your system during installation. How this affects your ability to use other Web sites on the server system depends on whether you are using Windows NT 4.0 Server or Windows NT 4.0 Workstation.

On Windows NT 4.0 Workstation systems, you can have only one Web site running at a time. When you install the Y2K Compliance Assessment Tool, any existing Web sites (including the default Microsoft site) are stopped so that the Y2K Compliance Assessment Tool Web server can run.

On Windows NT 4.0 Server systems, you can have multiple Web sites running at the same time. You can run additional Web sites on the system, but this is not recommended for the following reasons:

Installation Checks

During the Y2K Compliance Assessment Tool installation, the installation tool determines whether Microsoft Internet Information Server 4.0 (for Windows NT Server) or Microsoft Personal Web Server 4.0 (for Windows NT Workstation) is installed on your computer, as appropriate for your version of Windows NT. If this software is not installed, the installation aborts.

Client Requirements

Clients use a web browser running on a workstation or PC to access the Y2K Compliance Assessment Tool server. The hardware and software requirements for client workstations or PCs are as follows:

Web Browsers Supported

The Y2K Compliance Assessment Tool supports clients running the browsers shown in Table 2-4.
