Getting Started with User Registration

The following sections describe how to use the User Registration Tool (URT) application, and describe the most common tasks you will have to perform using URT:

Starting the URT Management Interface

You must start the URT management interface in order to make changes to the URT configuration. URT servers and clients are normally started automatically when their machines are booted.

Procedure

Step 1   Select Start>Programs>CWSI 2.3>Start User Registration Tool.

You are prompted to log into the ANI server.

Step 2   Enter a user name and the ANI server name, and click Login.

Once you are logged into the ANI server, the URT management interface appears.

Navigating in the Main URT Window

Figure 3-1 shows the main URT window, and is described in Table 3-1.

Callout Description

Save Status

An asterisk (*) in the title bar indicates that you have made changes in URT that you have not yet saved.

Folder Pane

The folder pane shows the available VTP domains, switches, VLANs, NT/NDS domains, user names, groups, organizational units, NT workstations and servers, and URT servers, in expanding and collapsing folders.

To modify the settings for an item in the folder pane, select the item and then select an appropriate command from the menus. (See the sections on specific tasks for information on what you can do to the items in the folders.) For user names, groups, organizational units, or VLANs, you can alter the associated attributes by double-clicking the name in the folder pane.

To expand or collapse a folder, click the + or - icon next to the folder, or double-click the folder.

When you start URT, all VTP domains, switches, and VLANs known to the ANI server are reflected in the folder pane. You cannot manually change these items. You must add NT domains and NDS directories manually, however. After you add the domains, URT automatically queries the domain controller or NetWare server for each listed domain, and shows all users, groups, and organizational units defined in that domain. User, group, and organizational unit names have these associated icons:

  • Gray—Names with gray icons are not associated to a specific VLAN.
  • Blue—Names with blue icons are associated with a specific VLAN in at least one VTP domain.
  • Gray with red X—Names with red X icons are currently defined in the URT database, but are no longer defined in the domain controller or NetWare server. These names are deleted from the URT database automatically the next time you save your changes to the URT database. Deleted VLANs also are signified with a red X icon.
  • Gray with blue X—Names with blue X icons are associated with a VLAN that no longer exists. You should associate these names with a different VLAN.

URT servers that have a red X through the icon are currently unavailable. When they are available, the X is removed.

List Pane

The list pane shows the attributes of items selected in the folder pane. The lists are empty if there are no attributes associated with the selected item, or no users logged into the item.

ANI Status

The ANI status indicator shows whether URT is connected or not connected to the ANI server.

Working with Lists in the List (Right-Hand) Pane

If a folder or an item in a folder has information associated to it, that information appears in the URT right-hand pane (list pane). You can reorder the columns in these lists by clicking on the column heading and dragging it to the desired location in the heading.

Table 3-2 describes the lists shown for items selected in URT folders.

Table 3-2   Information Associated with URT Folder Items

Folder Item Associated Lists1,2

Name of VTP domain (folder)

  • Logon VLAN—Information about the logon VLAN for the VTP domain. If there is more than one subnet and mask used on the VLAN, separate lines are shown for every pair of subnet and mask address.
  • Logged on Users—List of users logged onto the network in the VTP domain.

Switch (items in the Switch folder in a VTP domain)

  • VMPS Servers—List of VMPS servers used by the switch, including which server is the primary VMPS server, and which server is currently being used by the switch for VMPS
  • Logged on Users—List of users logged into the network through the switch

VLAN (items in the VLAN folder in a VTP domain)

  • Assigned Users—List of users you associated with the VLAN
  • Logged on Users—List of users logged into the VLAN

Name of NT/NDS domain

  • Logged on Users—List of users logged into the domain

Name of user

  • VLAN Associations—List of VLAN associations you created for the user. There are separate lines for every VTP domain in which you created a VLAN association for the user.
  • Login Information—List of machines on which the user is logged in. If there is a mismatch between your VLAN associations and the actual VLAN used, see "Symptom: Users Are Logging Into the Wrong VLAN" in Chapter 7.

Name of group or organizational unit

  • VLAN Associations—List of VLAN associations you created for the group or organizational unit. There are separate lines for every VTP domain in which you created a VLAN association for the group or organizational unit.

NT Hosts

  • Host List—List of NT machines in the NT domain and the status of the URT client service on the machine. Hosts are not listed for NDS Directories.

URT server (item in the URT Servers folder)

  • VMPS Clients—List of the switches configured to use the server as a VMPS server, and whether the server is a primary or secondary VMPS server for the switch. The switches that are actively using the server are also indicated.
1See "Determining Which Users Are Logged Into the Network" in Chapter 4 for more information on the Logged on Users list.

2See "Installing the URT Client Service on Workstations" in Chapter 6 for more information on the Host List.

Refreshing Folder Contents with New Information

If you make changes to other resources in the network while using URT, these changes are not reflected in the URT folders unless you refresh them.

For example, you should refresh your view if you add or delete a user, group, or organizational unit in the NT domain controller or NetWare server, add a switch to a VTP domain, install an additional URT server, add a Windows NT machine to the network, or define or delete a VLAN.

Procedure

Step 1   Select the folder whose contents you want to refresh.

Step 2   Select View>Refresh.

Tips

Finding a User or Other Resource in the Folder Pane

If you have a large number of users or other resources, such as VLANs, VTP domains, switches, and so on, you can search for them in the folder pane using the Find command. You can then perform various operations on the resource.

Procedure

Step 1   Select Edit>Find.

Step 2   In the Find window, enter the text or IP address that you want to find. Check Match case if you want to find only those items spelled exactly as you entered.

Step 3   Click Find Next.

If the item is in the list, it is highlighted. If the item is found in a closed folder, the folder is opened.

Tips

Logging Into Domains

You must have the appropriate authority in order to make changes to a domain in URT:

However, if you log into a domain with a non-Administrator account, you cannot make changes to settings for that domain in URT. You must log onto the domain using an Administrator account. See "Troubleshooting NT Authorization Problems" in Chapter 7 for more information on NT authorization issues.

Procedure

Step 1   When prompted to log into the domain, enter a user name that has the required authority.

Step 2   Enter the password for the user account and click OK.

Saving Your Changes to the URT Database

You must save changes to the database in order for the changes to affect user assignments to VLANs.

Procedure

Your changes are saved, and they are immediately active on your network.

Common Day-to-Day URT Tasks

You will need to perform the following tasks on an ongoing basis with URT deployed in your network:
