Getting Started with Cisco ANA 4.0

These topics explain how to get your system up and running, and ready for configuration:

Starting the Gateway Server

Adding Units

Launching the ANA 4.0 Client

Configuring ANA to View Network Elements

Starting the Gateway Server

To start the gateway and all required component processes:

Step 1 Log into the gateway server as anauser.

Step 2 Enter the following command

# cmpctl start

You will see a series of status messages as ANA starts the various component processes.

If you want to see the status messages again, enter the following command:

# cmpctl status

If you encounter any problems, see "Troubleshooting the Cisco ANA 4.0 Installation".

Adding Units

Note You need to perform this task only if you choose Unit while installing ANA on a machine that will act as a unit, and is different from the gateway server.

After you install the ANA software on a unit, you can add it to the ANA fabric by adding it to the gateway. ANA automatically registers the unit in the registry and creates a transport uplink between the unit and the gateway. The units are linked to the gateway in a star topology.

In addition, administrators can enable or disable high availability for a unit. These settings enable the administrator to define to which protection group a unit is assigned, and whether it is enabled for high availability.

For more information on high availability, see the Cisco Active Network Abstraction 4.0 User and Administration Guide. You can also choose Help > Help Contents in the Online help.

To add a new unit, do the following from the Administration perspective:

Step 1 From the ANA client user interface, open the Administration perspective.

Step 2 Go to the Object tab in the Administration perspective and click the ANA Servers drawer.

Step 3 From the gateway server, right-click New Unit Server.

The New ANA Unit Server dialog box is displayed.

Step 4 Enter the unit IP Address.

The gateway IP address value is prepopulated.

Note For more information on high availability, see the Cisco Active Network Abstraction 4.0 User and Administration Guide.

Step 5 Click OK.

The new unit is displayed in the tree pane and the workspace.

If the new unit is installed and reachable it will start automatically. Active (not standby) unit is registered with the gateway. Specifically, the command creates the configuration registry for the new unit in the registry.

ANA also automatically creates the transport uplinks between the unit and the gateway.

Launching the ANA 4.0 Client

To launch the ANA client.

Step 1 Choose Start > Programs > Cisco ANA > Cisco_ANA_Client_4.0 > ANA Client 4.0.

Step 2 Enter the following information:

The gateway server name or IP address

The anauser name

The anauser password

Step 3 Click Login.

You can now use the ANA user interface. To familiarize yourself with the interface, read the introductory information in the Cisco Active Network Abstraction 4.0 User and Administration Guide.

You can also view this information in the Online help, by clicking Help > Help Contents, and navigating to the overview information.

Configuring ANA to View Network Elements

Now that the gateway server is running and you can see the user interface, you can configure ANA to manage the various resources in your network.

To allow yourself and others to view network elements:

Add network elements

Create network domain maps

Create user accounts (with defined security roles) and scopes (collections of network elements)

Configure system settings such as trap forwarding, scheduled backups, creating banners, and so forth

Configure high availability protection for units (for unit redundancy)

These tasks are described in Cisco Active Network Abstraction 4.0 User and Administration Guide and in the online help (click Help > Help Contents and navigate to the overview information).

We recommend that you read this overview information. It will orient you to the ANA perspectives, and provides launch points for the different tasks you may want to perform depending on the needs of your network resource.

For example, you can set up workflows of activation scripts, view system events, generate inventory report, and so forth.
