Starting the Master Server

Starting the Master Server

This chapter describes the Master Server. It contains the following sections:

Overview

The Master Server is a service that starts and stops all other services. It lets you manually start and stop services through the Cisco Service Manager (CSM), or if a service has been configured to start automatically, it listens on that service port number, and starts the service when a request is heard on the port.

Starting and Stopping the Master Server

When the CSM is running, you can start and stop the Master Server from the CSM. When the CSM is not running, you can start the Master Server from the Control Panel in Windows NT, or from a command line in UNIX.

Starting and Stopping the Master Server Outside of the CSM

If you are running the Master Server under Windows NT, follow the procedure below to start it:

Step 1 Log in as administrator (or equivalent).

Step 2 From the Control Panel, double-click Services.

Step 3 Select Cisco Master Server.

Step 4 Click Start.

If you are running the Master Server under UNIX, follow the procedure below to start it:

Step 1 Log in as root (or equivalent).

Step 2 Enter the command:

installation_dir/CSCOcddm/bin/netcontrol

where installation_dir is the directory where you installed the Cisco DNS/DHCP Manager or Cisco Server Suite 1000.

Caution If you stop the Master Server, all other services stop as well.

If you are running the Master Server under Windows NT, follow the procedure below to stop it:

where installation_dir is the directory in which you installed the Cisco DNS/DHCP Manager or Cisco Server Suite 1000.

Starting, Stopping and Restarting the Master Server from the CSM

To start the Master Server from the CSM:

Step 1 Start the CSM. (For instructions on starting the CSM, see Chapter 2, "Configuring Services with the Cisco Service Manager.")

Step 2 Choose Master Server from the Available Services list.

Step 3 Click Start.

Caution If you stop the Master Server, all other services stop as well.

To stop the Master Server from the CSM:

Step 1 Start the CSM.

Step 2 Choose Master Server from the Available Services list.

Step 3 Click Stop.

To restart the Master Server from the CSM:

Step 1 Start the CSM.

Step 2 Choose Master Server from the Available Services list.

Step 3 Click Restart.

Controlling Access to the Master Server

The CSM lets you control access to the Master Server and other services. You can accept or reject connections from specified networks and individual hosts, specify the message sent when a connection is refused, and log accepted and refused connections. By default, the Master Server is configured to accept connections only from the CSM, reject connections from all other networks and hosts, and send a message when a connection is refused. The default message is:

000 Access to Master server denied

For instructions on changing the access control parameters, see Chapter 2, "Configuring Services with the Cisco Service Manager."
