This chapter provides information about using TrueView Catalyst 1600 Manager to manage the Catalyst 1600.
You can perform the following tasks:
You can view a table of information about the Catalyst 1600 devices in the Catalyst 1600 Manager database. For information about using the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table, refer to the instructions in the TrueView Applications Installation and User Guide.
In the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table, you can:
The Catalyst 1600 Manager Table displays a table entry for each device in the Catalyst 1600 Manager database.
Catalyst 1600 Manager displays a series of columns that contain information about the device.
Column | Description |
---|---|
Name | The descriptive name that you assign to the Catalyst 1600. |
Protocol | The protocol (IP or IPX) that Catalyst 1600 Manager uses to manage the device. |
IP Address | The IP address of the Catalyst 1600. If you do not set an IP address, the field contains the value 0.0.0.0. |
Subnet Mask | The IP subnet mask of the Catalyst 1600. |
IPX Network | The IPX network number of the Catalyst 1600. |
Comms Address | The address of the port that Catalyst 1600 Manager uses to manage the Catalyst 1600. |
Base Address | The base address of the Catalyst 1600. The node addresses of the Token Ring ports number incrementally from the base address. |
Ports | The number of ports on the device. |
Version | The version number of the run-time microcode the device is running. |
Location | The description that you use to record the location of the Catalyst 1600. |
Comments | The comment that you use to record other information about the Catalyst 1600. |
Manager Status | Describes the state of the management link to the Catalyst 1600 (see the section "Understanding the Manager Status".) |
Device Status | Describes the state of the Catalyst 1600 (see the section "Understanding the Device Status".) |
You can use the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table to save or print information about the Catalyst 1600 devices on the network.
To save the table to an ASCII text, Lotus 1-2-3, or dBASE III file, or to print the information:
Step 1 Select the table entries that you want to save or print.
The table entries you select are highlighted.
Step 2 Click on the Save button or the Print button.
Step 3 Set up the save or print options and click on the OK button.
You can configure the columns that are included in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table, change the order of the columns, and sort the table by the entries in any column. For information about configuring the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table, refer to the TrueView Applications Installation and User Guide.
To view a graphical representation of a Catalyst 1600 (see Figure 3-1), either double-click on the icon representing the device or double-click on the entry in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table. For information about viewing and configuring a table of devices, refer to TrueView Applications Installation and User Guide.
When you select a Catalyst 1600, Catalyst 1600 Manager polls the device for information and updates the dialog boxes at regular intervals.
The Catalyst 1600 dialog box displays:
The Catalyst 1600 dialog box has a toolbar that provides quick access to information about the device. The buttons in the toolbar are described in Table 3-2.

You can scroll through the LCD messages on the Catalyst 1600 using the paddle switch in the Catalyst 1600 dialog box, or click on the LCD to view all the LCD messages together in the Displays dialog box. If you have entered a valid password, changing the LCD display also changes the display on the actual Catalyst 1600.

To scroll through the LCD messages:
Step 1 Double-click on a Catalyst 1600 icon, or double-click on an entry in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table.
The Catalyst 1600 dialog box is displayed.
Step 2 Click on the paddle switch to the left of the LCD panel to move forwards or backwards through the messages.
To view all the LCD messages:
Step 1 Double-click on a Catalyst 1600 icon, or double-click on an entry in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table.
The Catalyst 1600 dialog box is displayed.
Step 2 Click on the LCD in the Catalyst 1600 dialog box.
The Displays dialog box shows all the LCD messages.
Step 3 Click on the message you want to view, and click on the OK button.
You can view and configure information about a Catalyst 1600 in the Information dialog box. The Information dialog box also enables you to access other configurable parameters.
To configure information about the Catalyst 1600:
Step 1 Double-click on a Catalyst 1600 icon, or double-click on an entry in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table.
The Catalyst 1600 dialog box is displayed.
Step 2 Click on the Information button.
The Information dialog box is displayed.
Field | Description |

Name | The descriptive name that you assign to the Catalyst 1600. Make sure the name consists of 16 characters or less. |
Location | The description that you enter to record the location of the Catalyst 1600. Make sure the location consists of 20 characters or less. |
Comments | The comment that you enter to record further information about the Catalyst 1600. Make sure the comment consists of 40 characters or less. |
Source routing | The source routing status of the Catalyst 1600 (see the section "Understanding the Source Routing Status" in Chapter 5, "Managing Bridging".) |
Up time | The time the Catalyst 1600 has been running since the last reset. |
IP address | The IP address of the Catalyst 1600. If you do not set an IP address, the field contains the value 0.0.0.0. |
Base address | The base address of the Catalyst 1600. The node addresses of the Token Ring ports number incrementally from the base address. |
Manager status | Describes the state of the management link to the Catalyst 1600 (see the section "Understanding the Manager Status".) |

The Manager Status field in the Information dialog box describes the state of the link to the Catalyst 1600.

This may occur if you added a Catalyst 1600 to the database, but the device can no longer be found on the network. The message does not occur for devices that are added to the database by autodiscovery. |
Lost | Catalyst 1600 Manager cannot find a Catalyst 1600 that was found on the network in the current management session. |
Not linked | Catalyst 1600 Manager does not have a management link to the Catalyst 1600. |
Bad password | Catalyst 1600 Manager had a management link to the Catalyst 1600, but the password for the Catalyst 1600 is now incorrect. |

The Device Status field in the Information dialog box describes the state of the Catalyst 1600.
Message | Description |

Catalyst 1600 requires new code | The Catalyst 1600 boot code or microcode is corrupted, or a user has pressed the Reset button on the Catalyst 1600 to start the loader program. |

Warning on one or more ports | The Catalyst 1600 has detected a warning condition on one or more ports. For example, a beaconing condition or single station error may have occurred. |
Warning on port | The Catalyst 1600 has detected a warning condition on the port. For example, a beaconing condition or single station error may have occurred. |
Error on port | The named port closed unexpectedly. |
Unknown | Catalyst 1600 Manager cannot determine the status of the Catalyst 1600. |
To manage a Catalyst 1600, establish a management link to the device. When you have entered the password, it is stored in the Catalyst 1600 database and you do not need to enter the password to manage the device in future. You can unlink Catalyst 1600 Manager from the device without losing the password.
There are two ways to link to a device.
Step 1 When you add a device, or a device is added by autodiscovery, Catalyst 1600 Manager attempts to link to it using the password defined in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Options dialog box (see the section "Configuring Catalyst 1600 Manager" in Chapter 2, "Getting Started").
Step 2 If the default password does not match, you can enter the password to establish a management link.
To establish a management link to a device:
Step 1 Double-click on a Catalyst 1600 icon, or double-click on an entry in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table.
The Catalyst 1600 dialog box is displayed.
Step 2 Click on the Information button.
The Information dialog box is displayed.
Step 3 Click on the Link button.
The Link dialog box is displayed.
Step 4 Click on the Link option button to link to the device, and enter the password if the Password field is displayed.
Step 5 Click on the OK button. If the password is correct, Catalyst 1600 Manager establishes a management link to the Catalyst 1600.
When you establish a link to a Catalyst 1600, you can change the device's password. When you change the password, any other management stations lose their management links to the device.
To change the password for a Catalyst 1600:
Step 1 Double-click on a Catalyst 1600 icon, or double-click on an entry in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table.
The Catalyst 1600 dialog box is displayed.
Step 2 Click on the Information button.
The Information dialog box is displayed.
Step 3 Click on the Password button.
Enter a new password in the Set password field, and repeat the text in the Confirm password field.
The characters you enter are shown as asterisk characters for security.
Step 4 Click on the OK button.
Catalyst 1600 Manager changes the password for the device.
For devices with microcode version 1.17 or later, you can configure the addresses of nodes that are allowed to manage a Catalyst 1600. If you enable the features, only nodes with the addresses you specify are able to manage the device or receive traps from the device.
When you configure authorized managers and trap destinations, specify the default gateway if the management stations are on remote networks.
To configure authorized managers:
Step 1 Double-click on a Catalyst 1600 icon, or double-click on an entry in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table.
The Catalyst 1600 dialog box is displayed.
Step 2 Click on the Security button on the toolbar.
The SNMP Authorization dialog box is displayed.
Step 3 Add authorized managers and trap destinations to the lists. Use the Copy button to copy addresses between the lists.
Step 4 Click on the OK button.
For devices with microcode version 1.17 or later, you can view a list of addresses of stations that are managing the Catalyst 1600 using SNMP over IPX and IP, and view the time in seconds since each station last managed the Catalyst 1600.
If the station is using SNMP over IPX, the IPX network number and address are displayed. If the station is using SNMP over IP, the IP address is displayed.
To view a list of users:
Step 1 Double-click on a Catalyst 1600 icon, or double-click on an entry in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table.
The Catalyst 1600 dialog box is displayed.
Step 2 Click on the Users button on the toolbar.
The Users dialog box is displayed.
You can configure Catalyst 1600 Manager to communicate with a Catalyst 1600 using SNMP over either IP or IPX, and change the IPX address and the IP address that Catalyst 1600 Manager uses to communicate with the Catalyst 1600. For example, if you want Catalyst 1600 Manager to communicate with a different Token Ring port, change the IPX address to identify the new port.
To change the management protocol:
Step 1 Double-click on a Catalyst 1600 icon, or double-click on an entry in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table.
The Catalyst 1600 dialog box is displayed.
Step 2 Click on the Information button.
The Information dialog box is displayed.
Step 3 Click on the Comms button.
The Edit Catalyst 1600 Comms dialog box is displayed.
Step 4 To change the management protocol, click on the Use IP button or the Use IPX button. If you choose IP, make sure the IP address matches the one you assign to the Catalyst 1600 (see the section "Configuring IP Services".) If you choose IPX, make sure the IPX address and network number identify the Token Ring port you want Catalyst 1600 Manager to communicate with.
Step 5 Click on the OK button.
You can configure the IP address and subnet mask for a Catalyst 1600. For devices with microcode version 1.17 or later, you can also configure the IP gateway.
To configure IP services:
Step 1 Double-click on a Catalyst 1600 icon, or double-click on an entry in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table.
The Catalyst 1600 dialog box is displayed.
Step 2 Click on the Information button.
The Information dialog box is displayed.
Step 3 Click on the IP button.
For devices with microcode version 1.17, you can change the IP address, subnet mask, and IP gateway in the IP Services dialog box (see Table 3-6). For devices with microcode earlier than version 1.17, you can change the IP address and subnet mask in the IP Addresses dialog box.
Step 4 Enter text in the Configured text box to change an address.
Step 5 Click on the OK button.
You can view information about the version number of Catalyst 1600 hardware.
To view version information:
Step 1 Double-click on a Catalyst 1600 icon, or double-click on an entry in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table.
The Catalyst 1600 dialog box is displayed.
Step 2 Click on the Versions button on the toolbar.
The Version Information dialog box is displayed.
When you have entered a valid password, you can download code to the Catalyst 1600 by right-clicking on the Reset button in the Catalyst 1600 dialog box. If the Catalyst 1600 uses microcode version 1.17 or later, you can also reset the Catalyst 1600, erase the stored configuration, erase the run-time microcode or erase the boot code.
You can download boot code or run-time microcode to the Catalyst 1600. Before downloading a microcode file to the Catalyst 1600, check the version that is running on the device (see the section "Viewing Version Information" earlier in this chapter).
To identify files containing boot code and run-time microcode, examine the first four letters in the filename as shown in Table 3-7.

When you download a file containing microcode:
Step 1 The Catalyst 1600 restarts.
Step 2 The file is downloaded.
Step 3 Existing microcode held in flash ROM is erased.
Step 4 The Catalyst 1600 restarts with the new code.
While you download microcode, the Catalyst 1600 is inoperative and some users may be unable to access network resources such as file servers. Downloading microcode may take several minutes to complete.
To download microcode to a Catalyst 1600:
Step 1 Double-click on a Catalyst 1600 icon, or double-click on an entry in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table.
The Catalyst 1600 dialog box is displayed.
Step 2 Right-click on the Reset button.
The pop-up menu is displayed.
Step 3 Click on the Download command.
Step 4 Read the warning and click on the OK button.
The Open dialog box is displayed.
Step 5 Select the file that you want to download to the Catalyst 1600.
Step 6 Click on the OK button.
If the Catalyst 1600 uses microcode version 1.17 or later, you can reset the Catalyst 1600 from the management station.
To reset the Catalyst 1600:
Step 1 Double-click on a Catalyst 1600 icon, or double-click on an entry in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table.
The Catalyst 1600 dialog box is displayed.
Step 2 Right-click on the Reset button.
A pop-up menu is displayed.
Step 3 Click on the Remote Reset menu command.
Step 4 Read the warning and click on the OK button.
The Catalyst 1600 resets.
If the Catalyst 1600 uses microcode version 1.17 or later, you can erase the stored configuration information and reset the settings, including the Catalyst 1600 password, to the factory default values.
To erase the stored configuration:
Step 1 Double-click on a Catalyst 1600 icon, or double-click on an entry in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table.
The Catalyst 1600 dialog box is displayed.
Step 2 Right-click on the Reset button.
A pop-up menu is displayed.
Step 3 Click on the Erase Config menu command.
Step 4 Read the warning and click on the OK button.
The stored configuration is erased.
If the Catalyst 1600 has microcode version 1.17 or later, you can erase the boot code that has been downloaded to the Catalyst 1600. When you reset the Catalyst 1600 after erasing the boot code, the Catalyst 1600 restarts using the boot code stored in read-only memory.
To erase the boot code:
Step 1 Double-click on a Catalyst 1600 icon, or double-click on an entry in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table.
The Catalyst 1600 dialog box is displayed.
Step 2 Right-click on the Reset button.
A pop-up menu is displayed.
Step 3 Click on the Erase Bootcode menu command.
Step 4 Read the warning and click on the OK button.
The boot code is erased. Use the Remote Reset menu command (see the section "Resetting the Catalyst 1600") to make the Catalyst 1600 restart using the boot code stored in ROM.
If the Catalyst 1600 has microcode version 1.17 or later, you can erase the run-time microcode from the Catalyst 1600.
To erase the microcode:
Step 1 Double-click on a Catalyst 1600 icon, or double-click on an entry in the Catalyst 1600 Manager Table.
The Catalyst 1600 dialog box is displayed.
Step 2 Right-click on the Reset button.
A pop-up menu is displayed.
Step 3 Click on the Erase Microcode menu command.
Step 4 Read the warning and click on the OK button.
The Catalyst 1600 runs the loader program, which waits for new code to be downloaded from the management station or a TFTP server, then erases the old version and restarts with the new code. For information about downloading, refer to the TrueView Applications Installation and User Guide.
