Frequently Asked Questions

As you install and use CEA for ISDN, you might have questions, or you might see messages that you don't understand. This chapter contains answers to many questions about installing and using CEA for ISDN.

Questions About Installing CEA for ISDN

This section contains questions that you might have about these activities:

When I Set Up Devices for Polling, Can I Use an IP Address for the Host Name?

If your system has a name resolution service (for example, DNS or HOSTS file), you can enter either a device name or an IP address in the Hostname field (in the Polling Options tab) in Device Manager.

If you do not have a name resolution service, you must enter an IP address in the Hostname field.

For complete instructions on setting up devices, see Chapter 2, "Installing and Configuring CEA for ISDN."

I Received the Message, "Host name <name> could not be resolved." What Should I Do?

This message means that CEA for ISDN cannot resolve the host name to a valid IP address; you need to verify that you specified the host name correctly when you set up your devices. To do this, follow these steps:

Step 1   Open a DOS window.

Step 2   Enter the PING command with the host name, and press Return.

If the message "Host name <name> could not be resolved" appears, you need to configure name resolution on your system in Network Services.

To reach Network Services, select Start>Settings>Control Panel>Network.

For complete information, see your system administrator.

How Do I Verify That All Required Services Are Running?

To verify that the system services are running, follow these steps:

Step 1   Open the Windows NT Services dialog box by selecting Start>Settings>
Control Panel
>Services.

Step 2   Verify that the following three CEA for ISDN services are started:

For all three services, the Status column should display Started and the Startup column should display Automatic.

If any of these three services is not running (indicated by a blank in the Status column), start the service manually. To do this, select the entry from the list, click Start, then verify that the Status column for that service changes from blank to Started.

Step 3   Click Close to close the Windows NT Services dialog box.

How Can I Import Device Information?

After you install CEA for ISDN, you need to define the devices you want to poll. There are two ways to do this:

To import a list of devices, follow these steps:

Step 1   Create an import file in ASCII text format that specifies the devices you want to monitor for ISDN call history data.

  <ipaddress> <hostname> [communitystring]
  where:
ipaddress is the required IP address of the device.
hostname is the required fully qualified domain name of the device.
communitystring is the optional community string for the device.
The following is an example of an import file:
  # Example import file
1.2.3.4 routerA.yourcompany.com public
1.2.3.5 routerB.yourcompany.com
1.2.3.6 routerC.yourcompany.com

Step 2   Select Start>Cisco Enterprise Accounting for ISDN>Device Manager.

The Device Manager dialog box appears and displays the Polling Options tab.

Step 3   Select File>Import Hosts.

The Import Host IDs dialog box appears.

Step 4   In the upper group box, enter the path name to the import file in the Name of Hosts File field.

If you want to use the Browse facility, click Browse to access the Windows NT Open dialog box.

Step 5   In the lower group box, select the UNIX Hosts File Format check box, then enter the default SNMP Read community string in the Community String field. Device Manager applies this setting to all the devices specified in your import file.

Step 6   When finished, click OK.

If needed, you can use Device Manager to modify the SNMP Read community string for individual devices. For more information, see Chapter 2, "Installing and Configuring CEA for ISDN."

How Do I Upgrade from Version 1.0?

During the upgrade of CEA for ISDN from Version 1.0 to Version 2.0, the Version 1.0 data records are preserved.

Note You must be logged into Windows NT with administrator privileges for the software to be installed/upgraded properly.

To upgrade from Version 1.0, follow these steps:

Step 1   Remove Port Monitor from Startup. Recording, Translation, and Port Monitor cannot be loaded during the upgrade process.

Step 2   Restart the PC.

Step 3   Using Windows Explorer, create an Oldver folder on the root of C:\.

Step 4   Copy the following folders from the Cisco Enterprise Accounting folder to the Oldver folder:

Step 5   Copy Portmonitor.ini from the Windows folder to the Oldver folder.

Step 6   Uninstall Cisco Enterprise Accounting:

Step 7   Using Windows Explorer, verify that the following files were deleted. If they were not, delete them manually.

Step 8   Install Cisco Enterprise Accounting for ISDN, Version 2.0. For complete instructions, see Chapter 2, "Installing and Configuring CEA for ISDN."

Step 9   When installation is finished, restart your system.

Recording and Translation are loaded as NT services, and Port Monitor is added to the Startup group. Port Monitor should also initialize.

Step 10   Next you will convert the data from Version 1.0 tables to Version 2.0 tables. During this process, Recording, Translation, and Port Monitor cannot be running. To stop these processes, select File>Stop Exit Port Monitor in Port Monitor.

Step 11   Stop the CEA Daemon Manager, CEA Recording, and CEA Translation services. To do this:

Step 12   Select Start>Cisco Enterprise Accounting for ISDN>Cisco Enterprise Accounting for ISDN to start the application.

Step 13   Archive the Version 1.0 database so you can recover these tables in case you encounter an error during the data conversion process. To do this:

To convert the Version 1.0 tables to Version 2.0 tables, you need to enter a series of commands. (You can use the command line to perform low-level FoxPro commands.)

Step 14   Convert the first table, RAWDATA. Use the FoxPro APPEND command to add records to the selected table from another file. Enter the following commands:

USE RAWDATA
APPEND FROM C:\OLDVER\RECORDING\RAWDATA

The number of records being appended is displayed at the bottom of the screen.

When all records have been appended, the cursor returns. To view the table, type BROWSE. When you are finished viewing, close the Browse window to return to the command line.

Step 15   Convert the Directory tables. Use the Browse command after each append to ensure that the records are added. Enter the following commands:

USE DIRECT
APPEND FROM C:\OLDVER\DATA\DIRECT

USE LOOKUP
APPEND FROM C:\OLDVER\DATA\LOOKUP

Step 16   Convert the System Information table. Enter the following commands:

USE SYSINF EXCL ORDER TAG01
DELETE ALL FOR ID<300 OR ID>405
PACK
APPEND FROM C:\OLDVER\DATA\SYSINF

Setting Up Exception Alarms

It is very important that you set your alarm thresholds high enough to capture exceptions only. If your output is set to SNMP and your thresholds are too low, this could have a negative impact on network performance. To determine the acceptable parameters, it is recommended that you run Traffic Statistics and Exception reports before setting up your alarms. Before selecting SNMP as the output, it is a good idea to send the alarm output to e-mail or to the log file to view the types of records on which alarms are being generated.

To create a new alarm, follow these steps:

Step 1   From the Main Menu, click Exception Reports.

The Exception Report Options window appears.

Step 2   Select the second option, "Set up exception alarms on cumulative data" by clicking on the icon.

The Exception Alarms dialog box appears.

Step 3   Click New.

The Alarm Templates dialog box appears.

Step 4   Find the template you want and double-click it.

The Parameters dialog box appears with the Parameters tab selected.

Step 5   Enter the information in the fields as appropriate. For details on each field, see the online help.

Step 6   If you want to change the parameters in the template, make the modifications in the Parameters tab.

Otherwise, to define your own parameters, select the Custom tab and enter the parameters you want. For details on each field, see the online help.

Step 7   Specify the destination for the alarm in the Output Options tab.

The choices are:

Step 8   When you are finished, click Run.

The system asks you to provide a name for the alarm.

Step 9   Click Yes. A Save As dialog box appears.

Step 10   Enter the name of alarm. The file extension is .ALM by default.

Step 11   Click Save.

The parameters are saved to the file and alarms are generated to the selected output option using the parameters you defined.
