Technology Commands

Options on the Technology Commands menu within the EM allow for quick and easy initiation of actions that were previously only available via the command line interface (CLI) using Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) commands. Using the provided automated technology commands can assist you in determining the root cause to many typical issues you may experience while managing network objects.

The following lists the IOS commands which are automated within the EM:

  • save running config
  • show environment
  • show running-config interface
  • show atm vc interface
  • show atm traffic
  • clear
  • show controller
  • show interface
  • shut
  • no shut
  • ping

The Technology Commands chapter contains the following sections:

Save Running Config to Startup Config

Two configurations reside within the EM, a running config and a start up config. As you make changes while working on the system, the running config updates automatically. However, if you should reboot the device, the EM automatically defaults to the current (saved) start up config and a new running config initiates. As such, the changes made to the previous running config are lost. To prevent this from happening, the EM enables you to write changes from the running config to the start up config during the same session.

This functionality is also present via the Chassis Configuration window. For information on saving the running config to the startup config using the Chassis Configuration window, see the "Writing a Running Config" section.

The EM provides this function for all supported chassis objects.

To save the running config, proceed as follows:

Step 1   Right-click (on a relevant object icon in the Map Viewer window or from an object pick list) and choose Cisco Access Router Manager > Technology Commands > Save Running Config. Refer to "EM Windows" for information on which objects allow you to launch the Save Running Config window.

The window appears displaying the running config save actions.

Step 2   Review the information as necessary.

Step 3   Click Close to close the window.

Showing Environment Data

The show environment option displays temperature and voltage information for the selected chassis object in a terminal window. The EM provides this function for all supported chassis objects.

To show environment data, proceed as follows:

Step 1   Right-click (on a relevant object icon in the Map Viewer window or from an object pick list) and choose Cisco Access Router Manager > Technology Commands > Show Environment. Refer to "EM Windows" for information on which objects allow you to launch the Show Environment window.

The window appears displaying the show environment command data.

Step 2   Review the information as necessary.

Step 3   Click Close to close the window.

Shutting Down an Interface

The shut command shuts down the selected object. A terminal window displays, listing the actions as they occur, as a form of user feedback. Following a shut command, the administrative status of the object is classified as down.

To put a shutdown object back into service, use the no shut command. For information on the automated no shut command, see the "Putting a Shutdown Interface Back InService" section on the following page.

The EM provides this function for all supported interface objects.

To shutdown an interface, proceed as follows:

Step 1   Right-click (on a relevant object icon in the Map Viewer window or from an object pick list) and choose Cisco Access Router Manager > Technology Commands > Shut. Refer to "EM Windows" for information on which objects allow you to launch the Interface Shut window.

The window appears displaying the interface shut command data.

Step 2   Review the information as necessary.

Step 3   Click Close to close the window.

Putting a Shutdown Interface Back In-Service

The no shut command puts a previously shut(down) object back into service. For additional information on the shut command, see the "Shutting Down an Interface" section on the preceding page. A terminal window displays, listing the actions as they occur, as a form of user feedback. The EM provides this function for all supported interface objects.

To put a previously shutdown interface back in-service, proceed as follows:

Step 1   Right-click (on a relevant object icon in the Map Viewer window or from an object pick list) and choose Cisco Access Router Manager > Technology Commands > No shut. Refer to "EM Windows" for information on which objects allow you to launch the Interface No Shut window.

The window appears displaying the interface no shut command data.

Step 2   Review the information as necessary.

Step 3   Click Close to close the window.

Pinging Devices

Using the ping command, you can determine whether a device is reachable by its IP address from another device. The EM provides this function for all supported interface objects. Ping results display in a terminal window.

To ping ICMP packets, proceed as follows:

Step 1   Right-click (on a relevant object icon in the Map Viewer window or from an object pick list) and choose Cisco Access Router Manager > Technology Commands > Ping. Refer to "EM Windows" for information on which objects allow you to launch the Ping window.

The Ping Command window appears.

Step 2   Enter the IP address of the device you want to ping in the Ping field.

Step 3   Click OK.

The Ping Command window closes and a window appears displaying the ping data.

Step 4   Review the information as necessary.

Step 5   Click Close to close the window.

Showing the Running Config

The show running config command on a selected ATM interface displays subset of the entire running config, specific to the selected object.

To show running interface data, proceed as follows:

Step 1   Right-click (on a relevant object icon in the Map Viewer window or from an object pick list) and choose Cisco Access Router Manager > Technology Commands > Show running-config interface. Refer to "EM Windows" for information on which objects allow you to launch the Show Running Interface window.

The window appears displaying the show running interface command data.

Step 2   Review the information as necessary.

Step 3   Click Close to close the window.

Showing ATM Traffic

Displays the in-coming and out-going traffic on the selected ATM interface. A listing of the activity to and from the selected interface displays in a terminal window.

To show ATM interface traffic data, proceed as follows:

Step 1   Right-click (on a relevant object icon in the Map Viewer window or from an object pick list) and choose Cisco Access Router Manager > Technology Commands > Show atm traffic. Refer to "EM Windows" for information on which objects allow you to launch the Show ATM Interface Traffic window.

The window appears displaying the traffic interface data.

Step 3   Click Close to close the window.

Showing ATM Virtual Circuit Data

Active ATM virtual circuits (VCs), including PVCs and SVCs, and traffic information for the selected ATM interface object display in a terminal window when this feature is selected. If there are no VCs configured on the interface, information to that effect displays in a terminal window instead.

To show VC data, proceed as follows:

Step 1   Right-click (on a relevant object icon in the Map Viewer window or from an object pick list) and choose Cisco Access Router Manager > Technology Commands > Show atm vc interface. Refer to "EM Windows" for information on which objects allow you to launch the Show ATM VC Interface window.
