Obtaining Technical Assistance
New Hardware Features
This section is a high-level overview of the hardware features of ONS 15216—Network Release 2.0.
Added Signal Attenuation
The ONS 216 OADM allows the user to provision the device to attenuate the optical power of the added channel to a user-defined value. This allows the user to balance the optical power of the added channel to that of the through (express) channels. The end result is drastically reduced gain competition in multi-node amplified networks.
New Software Features
This section is a high-level overview of the software features of ONS 15216—Network Release 2.0.
TL1 Agent
ONS 15216 features a TL1-compliant Network Element (NE) software supervision agent. TL1 Agent - Release 2.0 supports release 2.0 of ONS 15216.
The TL1 Agent offers the following features:
•Full FCAPS (Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Optical Performance and Security management) capabilities
•Management of added channels on an individual basis
•Software download
•Alarm service affecting indication
•Event logging
•Local Craft user profile password management
•Set/retrieve NE type
•TL1 Agent profiling
Remote Software Downloading and Activation (Non-Service affecting)
All the TL1 software of the ONS 15216 System can be remotely downloaded and activated without affecting the client traffic.
Quality of Signal Monitoring
ONS 15216 provides quality of signal monitoring through the TL1 Agent interface. Threshold crossing alerts are available on all the monitored parameters and counters through the TL1 Agent interface.
Alarm Correlation (NE Level)
ONS 15216 provides, through the TL1 interface, alarm correlation at the NE level. This prevents a flurry of alarms from being presented to the NOC in case of catastrophic events such as fiber cuts, and allows rapid fault isolation and location.

CSCdw60751: TL-1 command to view all current active users
A TL1 command to view all current active users does not exist.

CSCdx52920: Craft port TL1 commands require terminating carriage return
The RS-232 craft port requires that a terminating carriage return be entered for the TL1 command to be accepted. This is incorrect, the semicolon should be sufficient to terminate the TL1 command. Note however that the LAN port TL1 session does not require the carriage return, so this should not be an issue for OSMINE testing (which uses only the LAN port).

CSCdx52954: CANC-USER command should have <uid> field mandatory
As per TR-835, the command CANC-USER, for terminating a session, requires the field <uid>, user identifier, as mandatory, not optional (as currently implemented).

CSCdx52979: ATAGSEQ parameter of RTRV-AO command returns unexpected error message
The command RTRV-AO (Retrieve Autonomous Output) foresees the parameter ATAGSEQ for specifying the range of autonomous message that the user wants to retrieve. If the upper bound of this range is greater than any autonomous message actually present, the OADM returns an error (IDRG- Input, Data Range Error). It should indeed return the present autonomous messages which however fall in the specified range.

Workaround
The user is able to retrieve the number of the last current autonomous message (by not specifying the ATAGSEQ parameter), and can then use this number as upper bound for the ATAGSEQ range.
CSCdx57018: <aid> field mandatory for RTRV-TH-DWDM, INIT-SYS, RTRV-ALM-ENV command
The commands RTRV-ALM-ENV, RTRV-TH-DWDM and INIT-SYS should have the access identifier field, <aid>, mandatory, as per GR-199 AND GR-833.

CSCdx57022: ED-DWDM rejects command when plus sign used for dBm setting
The ED-DWDM command is rejected if a plus sign is used to specify a positive setting for the power level in dBm. CSCdx57044: TL1 - RTRV-HDR command returns COMPLD prior to active TL1 logging session
The following procedure was performed: A) Telnet into 3083 port of the OADM B) Send RTRV-HDR command to the device and the command got completed In step (B) the RTRV-HDR command should have been denied. This command (i.e RTRV-HDR) should get completed after the TL1 session is established and must be denied prior establishing of TL1 session. CSCdx57061: Telnet port 3083 does not require a semicolon after TL1 commands
TL1 commands are sent on the 3083 telnet port when the user hits the enter key -- no semicolon is required. This behavior is inconsistent with port 3082, which requires that a semicolon be used to terminate and send a TL1 command.

CSCdx57062: Passwords should be masked when using ED-PID command
When using the command ED-PID for editing passwords, neither the old nor the new password should be displayed on the screen, as per TR-835,page 3-52. Note that the same issue stands for the ONS15454, which shows the passwords when using ED-PID command. Notice also that for related commands, such as ED-USER-SECU and ENT-USER-SECU, the standard does not specify the above mentioned requirements.

CSCdx57094: CTRL-X during Craft port TL1 session causes system reboot
If ctrl-x is sent on the RS-232 Craft port during a hyperterminal session (the Windows hot key for "cut"), the OADM reboots. The 15454 has the same bug, which will be fixed. The bug can be fixed in the Lumos tool kit level. The 15454 bug ID is CSCdx40587. Note that ctrl-c causes the WindRiver operating system prompt to be shown, although it is not actually active.

CSCdx60906: Spaces are not ignored within input messages
As per GR-831, spaces must be "completely ignored" within input messages. So for example RTRV-HDR:::CTAG; should be exactly the same as RTRV -HDR:::CTAG; which actually is not the way the command is implemented (it returns IICM).

CSCdx69380: When notification code is CL, alarm code should be A^
As per GR-833, when a notification code <ntfncode> is CL, cleared, the relevant alarm code <almcode> should be A^. This impacts REPT-ALM-DWDM command. CSCdx69847: General block should not be allowed in ACT-USER command
The General Block should be null for ACT-USER command; instead the OADM allows the user to enter a nonsense General Block without returning any error message and completing the login, as shown in the following example: agent> act-USER::CISCO15:LLL:JHSHJHAJSHJSGGSJSSHS872828; SOADM 2002-05-18 20:08:12 M LLL COMPLD; A reasonable answer could be an Input error message, such as INUP (Non-null un-implemented parameter).

CSCdx69888: No password check is performed for CISCO15 default user

CSCdx70853: RTRV-USER-SECU allowed only to RWA users
As per TR-835, RTRV-USER-SECU command should allow a user with Admin privileges to retrieve information about all the users, and should allow each user to retrieve his own security information; the latter is currently not implemented in the OADM.

CSCdx71473: Incorrect handling of date format in ED-DAT command

CSCdx71504: OADM accepts correlation tags with value zero
As per GR-831 the correlation tag (CTAG) block is not allowed to be a zero decimal number, instead actually the OADM accepts CTAG equal to zero, as shown in the enclosure here below reported; agent> ED-DAT:::0::2002-06-10,17-00-00; SOADM 2002-06-10 17:00:00 M 0 COMPLD /* ED-DAT */;

CSCdx71517: General block should be null for ED-DAT command

CSCdx73174: General Block should not be supported for the following commands
As foreseen by the implementation, the GB (General Block) field should not be supported for the following commands, instead it is allowed:

•RTRV-HDR

CSCdx73860: REPT-ALM message format does not comply with GR-833
The OSMINE pre-test identified that the REPT ALM message does not conform with GR-833:
1. The <aid> field "ENV" is not shown
2. The <srveff> field is not shown
3. The <conddescr> field should be preceded with a colon

CSCdx74272: RTRV-ALM-ALL and RTRV-COND-ALL commands are missing
The pre-OSMINE testing discovered that the RTRV-ALM-ALL and RTRV-COND-ALL commands are missing.

CSCdx74292: TL1 command help works before logging in
The TL1 command help should not work before the user is logged in. This is a security issue. The user should not be able to press the tab key to see the command syntax before logging in.

CSCdx80821: OADM lockup during data transfer
If the user performs incorrectly the Sw upgrade procedure, e.g. does not set to Bin (binary) the format to be used for data transfer, the OADM locks and does not allow any further connection to be established.

Workaround
From craft port, press Enter, then you find a "->",
Type: route Add ("0.0.0.0","<gateway>") and press Enter.
Then you will be able to ping the OADM.
Perfom the FTP following the standard procedure specified in the manual. At the end reboot the OADM through the craft port using the command Ctrl-X.

This section describes any special instructions, limitations, and restrictions associated with ONS 15216—Network Release 2.0.
Operations Manual
This section lists the known documentation errata of the Cisco ONS 15216 release 2.0 system.
•RTRV-DFLT-SECU <tmout> variable is actually 0-99 minutes, where 0 indicates that the auto logout feature is disabled.
•RTRV-NE-GEN output format, output parameters, and output examples are missing the "A_POWER" and "B_POWER" parameters.
•RTRV-USER-SECU output example incorrectly shows a "COMPLD" response instead of the actual "RTRV" response.
•Page 3-14 In-Service TL1 Software Upgrade: the INIT-SYS commands are missing the <aid>=ALL field as follows:
–Step 2 should say "INIT-SYS::ALL:1::2;"
–Step 8 should say "INIT-SYS::ALL:1::1;"
•Page 3-19 ED-NE-GEN description: state that the IPMASK and GATEWAY parameters can not be modified unless the IPADDRESS parameter is also specified.

Technical Assistance Center
The Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) is available to all customers who need technical assistance with a Cisco product, technology, or solution. Two levels of support are available: the Cisco TAC Web Site and the Cisco TAC Escalation Center.
Cisco TAC inquiries are categorized according to the urgency of the issue:
