Dummy Filter Module

This chapter describes the Dummy Filter module (DFM).

9.1 Functional Description

The function of the DFM is to fill empty space (if any) in the passive optical shelf at the ONS 15252 Multichannel Unit (MCU). This space is typically between Termination modules (TM) or the two halves of the Bridge module (BM).

Figure 9-1 illustrates the DFM.

Note   The DFM is passive and does not include alarm or supervisory subunit functions. In addition, front-panel indicators, connectors, or adjustments are not associated with the DFM.

9.2 Technical Specifications

This section provides environmental and mechanical specifications for the DFM. The DFM is a passive device. Optical and electrical specifications and default thresholds do not apply.

9.2.1 Environmental Specifications

Table 9-1 lists environmental specifications for the DFM during operating conditions.

9.3 Removing and Replacing a DFM

This section explains how to remove and replace the DFM. Install the DFM in the passive optical shelf. Make sure the replacement module and any supplies, such as tagging materials, are present on site before beginning the removal and replacement procedures. See Figure 9-2 for DFM placement in the shelf.

Warning The Multichannel Unit (MCU) is energized with -48 VDC power.

Caution   Static electricity can damage electro-optical modules. While handling electro-optical modules, wear a grounding wrist strap to discharge the static buildup. Wrist straps are designed to prevent static electricity damage to equipment.

Remove the Dummy Filter Module from the Passive Optical Shelf

Step 1   Open the passive optical shelf cover.

Step 2   Push the button at the bottom of the DFM.

Step 3   Move the DFM upwards.

Step 4   Carefully slide it toward you.

Step 5   Remove the DFM from the passive optical shelf.

Step 6   Close the passive optical shelf cover.

Replace the Dummy Filter Module in the Passive Optical Shelf

Step 1   Open the passive optical shelf cover.

Step 2   Position the DFM in the passive optical shelf.

Step 3   Slide the DFM on the bottom so the rear MCU crossbeam fits into the groove in the back of the DFM.

Step 4   Push in the button at the module bottom to snap into place.

Step 5   Close the passive optical shelf cover.
