Getting Started

Logging In to the Cisco ESSE

The default URL for the login page on the server is http:// serverIP:1741. The login page is similar to the one shown in Figure 2-1.

Reachable Devices

The first screen displays a list of all discovered Cisco ONT 1031 units reachable in the Layer 2 network (an example of a layer 2 network was shown earlier in Figure 1-1). From this screen, you can select the device to monitor and configure. Each device is identified by its MAC address, registered with the Cisco ESSE at the device discovery. You can select only one Cisco ONT 1031 at a time. The user can check the status of the device, show additional details of the selected device, delete the selected device, rediscover the network, or find a specific device by MAC address.

You can view reachable and unreachable devices in the network. Using the View Unreachable Devices link, you can see a list of unreachable devices from this screen. A sample Reachable devices screen is shown in Figure 2-2.

To return to this list from other screens in the GUI, select the Device List tab at the top of the screen. There are also tabs for the Logs, Administration, Help, About, and Logout screens.

The message logs and administration screens are not needed to manage Cisco ONT 1031 devices and are primarily of interest to Cisco ESSE administrators. The Help, About, and Logout screens are self-explanatory, and so are not documented.

Unreachable Devices

By clicking View Unreachable Devices, you can view all the unreachable devices in the network. Such devices were discovered by the system at some point, but later did not respond to a request within the 10-sec timeout period. Such devices are automatically removed from the Reachable Devices list and placed on the Unreachable Devices list by the Cisco ESSE software. An Unreachable Devices screen is shown in Figure 2-3.

Device Screen Functions

The following functions are available on both the Reachable Devices and Unreachable Devices screens.

Check Status

To check the status of a device, click the Check Status button. This checks whether the device is reachable and displays the current state of the device, either Up or Unreachable.

If the device is in the list of reachable devices, but Check Status finds that the device is currently not reachable, the device is moved to the Unreachable Devices list. If the device is in the Unreachable Devices list, but Check Status finds that the device is currently reachable, the device is moved to the Reachable Devices list.

Find

To find a particular MAC address in the currently displayed list of devices, press the Find button and enter the desired MAC address. If the address is in the list, the address is highlighted. The Find function is not case-sensitive. On Internet Explorer browsers, the list automatically scrolls to display the highlighted address.

Delete Device

Selecting the Delete Device button removes all locally stored information about the selected device. However, a device that is still reachable will be rediscovered automatically within 15 min. If there are other Cisco ONT 1031 units known by the Cisco ESSE in the same VLAN as the deleted device, then a manual Rediscover operation will also cause the device to be rediscovered.

Note   If an L2NMP request is still pending against the device by the Cisco ESSE system, the Delete operation will fail. Try again in a short time after the request has had time to finish.

Rediscover

You can rediscover the Cisco ONT 1031 units in the Layer 2 network. Rediscovery remaps the entire network and brings all cached control register information up-to-date. This is a costly operation because all the Cisco ONT 1031devices are asked to re-send all configuration information, including their MAC addresses. Issuing a rediscovery request results in loss of connectivity for a few minutes, during which time you will have access only to the data stored on the server system. This loss of connectivity applies only to management information; subscriber connectivity through the Cisco ONT 1031is unaffected.

Note   All devices in the reachable list are automatically moved to the unreachable list at the start of the Rediscover operation. As devices are discovered by the system, they are moved from the unreachable list back to the reachable list. If any completely new devices in the network have not yet been discovered, these devices are picked up as well, if they are connected to known VLANs. Otherwise they are discovered as described in the "First-Time Discovery of the Network" section.

To view updated information, press the Refresh List button or use the browser reload capability.

The Rediscover operation may take a few minutes; it operates across all known devices and VLANs, rather than for a specific device.
