Cluster View

Cluster View is a network neighborhood display that contains a double-switch icon of the cluster, candidate icons, and icons of edge devices directly connected to the cluster. If more than one cluster exists, each is represented by a double-switch cluster icon and a white label. If the members of a cluster are visible but the command switch is not, the members appear as edge devices in Cluster View, and the host name or MAC address of each device is displayed on its label.

With this window, you can:

You cannot perform cluster management tasks or generate link reports or bandwidth graphs from the Cluster View window.  You must access Cluster Manager or Cluster Builder to do these tasks.

Determining Why a Device Was Not Added to the Cluster

To determine why a device was not added to the cluster, you can display a disqualification message: right-click on the device, then select Disqualification Code from the the pop-up menu to display the message. If the message indicates that the device is unreachable, the connection through the management VLAN might not exist. A device can also be disqualified if the software installed on it does not support clustering.

Changing User Settings

User settings control the polling interval for updating the Cluster Builder window, the graph polling interval, and the screens that display when you launch the Cluster Management Suite. You can change user settings and save them on the command switch so they remain in effect when you launch the application later.

To change user settings, select User Settings from the Cluster menu. For more information, click Help on the User Settings window.

Displaying Cluster Manager

From Cluster View, you can go to Cluster Manager, which shows a graphic of a switch cluster (the command switch and member switches) in a wiring closet view. By default, the command switch is the top switch in the cluster and is the only cluster member with an IP address displayed. Using Cluster Manager, you can perform tasks on the port, device, and cluster level.

To display Cluster Manager, select GoTo Cluster Manager from the Cluster menu. (Click here for more information on Cluster Manager.)

Displaying Cluster Builder

In Cluster Builder, the network map displays all cluster members and candidates that are a specified hop count from the cluster (see Changing User Settings). From this view, you can add switches to and remove them from a cluster, generate device and link graphs, and display the device web page for the command switch. You can also return to Cluster View or go to the Cluster Manager window.

To display Cluster Builder, select Toggle Views from the Views menu. (Click here for more information on Cluster Builder).

Displaying Host Names or Addresses and Port Connections

By default, Cluster View displays the host name on the label of each device. To display address and port connection information instead of host names, select Toggle Labels from the Views menu.

When you toggle to addresses and port connection information, Cluster View displays the IP address for each device if this address is assigned; otherwise, it displays the device MAC address.

Arranging and Saving the Device Layout

To arrange and save the device layout on the Cluster View window:

  1. Click and hold the left mouse button on a device and drag it to a new location on the network map.
  2. Select Save Layout from the Options menu.
When you relaunch Cluster View, it displays the saved version of the layout unless the topology has changed. If the topology has changed, you must arrange the devices again and select Save Layout.

Saving a Configuration

Saving a configuration records any changes that you make using the Cluster View window to nonvolatile memory. Your changes remain in effect for subsequent sessions. To save your changes to nonvolatile memory, select Save Configuration from the Options menu.
