Network Management System Requirements

Network Management System Requirements

To manage a network of LightStream 2020 multiservice ATM switches (LS2020 switches), you run the StreamView network management application on a workstation that functions in the capacity of a network management system (NMS). The NMS, which can be a Sun SPARCstation or a member of the HP/Apollo Series 700 family of workstations, provides the means for configuring, monitoring, and controlling LS2020 switches in your network.

Note You can run StreamView on the NMS either with or without HP OpenView. However, the LS2020 topology map, which creates a graphical representation of the topology of an LS2020 network, must be run in conjunction with HP OpenView.

Hardware Requirements

The hardware requirements for running StreamView on an NMS are outlined below:

At a minimum, you should have as much disk space for dynamic swapping as you have RAM.
Consult the HP OpenView documentation for detailed information about reserving disk swap space.

Note If you plan to load additional software onto your NMS hard disk other than that described in the section below entitled "
Software Requirements," you may need a larger hard disk than specified above.

Software Requirements

The StreamView network management application embodies a number of discrete modules that enable the user to configure, monitor, and control an entire network of LS2020 switches. Thus, StreamView, with its complement of fully-integrated network management modules, is the primary network management tool for an LS2020 network.

CiscoView, also a network management facility available for use with the LS2020, but less inclusive in its functionality, is a GUI-based, device management application that displays a real-time physical view of an LS2020 switch. CiscoView provides dynamic status, statistics, and configuration information for an LS2020 switch.

The requirements for using these LS2020 network management facilities are presented in separate sections below.

StreamView Requirements

To use the StreamView network management application, the following software must be installed on the NMS hard disk:

Note The operating system required for LS2020 network management is not the default software currently being shipped with new Sun SPARCstations or HP workstations. To use StreamView on the NMS, you must specifically ask for the SunOS 4.1.3 or SunOS 4.1.4
operating system to be installed on the NMS hard disk.

You have the option of running HP OpenView on the NMS in conjunction with StreamView. If you elect to run HP OpenView with StreamView, the following version information is applicable:

Note If you intend to use the LS2020 topology map, HP OpenView must be installed on the NMS hard disk.

For more information about HP OpenView operating requirements, see the HP OpenView Management Platform Performance and Configuration Guide.

CiscoView Requirements

The CiscoView network management application, which displays in color a real-time graphical representation of an LS2020 switch, can be run on a variety of platforms, including the following:

In addition, CiscoView has been tested in conjunction with the following network management platforms:
