OOD Field Diagnostic Image Overview

An OOD Field Diagnostic image is used to test and verify hardware problems. An OOD Field Diagnostic image is downloaded from Cisco.com onto the hardware that needs to be tested. It is important to note that a single version of a Field Diagnostic image can work on multiple Cisco IOS release trains.

For instructions on using an OOD Field Diagnostic image on a Cisco 10000 series router, see the Online Offline Diagnostics—Field Diagnostics on Cisco 10000 Series Routers User's Guide.

This Field Diagnostic image can also be used to test some Cisco 10000 series line cards operating in a Cisco uBR10000 series router. For instructions on using an OOD Field Diagnostic image on a Cisco uBR10000 Series Router, see the Online Offline Diagnostics—Field Diagnostics on Cisco uBR10000 Series Routers User's Guide.

Hardware and Software Requirements

The following tables provide information regarding which hardware can be tested using OOD Field Diagnostic image 1.1 and the Cisco IOS release where support for this hardware was added. External Loopback Test on Channelized T3 Line Card Notes

For the Channelized T3 line card, external loopback tests cannot be run using the port keyword option in the diagnostic start command. Instead, external loopback tests can be run on CT3 line cards by specifying the test IDs that are mapped to specific interfaces on the router. The process for running an external loopback test on a CT3 line card is given below:

Step 1 Cable the CT3 line card for external loopback testing.

Step 2 Enter the show diagnostic content command and locate the tests that contain the L attribute. In the following example, test IDs 119-142 are all external loopback tests. If you want to run a specific external loopback test, note the ports that are supported by tests (for example, if you want to run external loopback tests on port 1, select test IDs 123-126).

Router# show diagnostic content slot 6

Slot 6: 6cht3-1, 6 ports

Diagnostics test suite attributes:
B/* - Basic ondemand test / NA
P/V/* - Per port test / Per device test / NA
D/N/* - Disruptive test / Non-disruptive test / NA
S/* - Only applicable to standby unit / NA
U/* - Default non-intervention test / NA
L/* - External loopback test / NA

Step 3 Enter the diagnostic start slot slot-number test range command (or subslot in place of slot when appropriate) where range is the test IDs that support the external loopback test. For instance, range would be 123-126 if you were running external loopback tests on port 1.

Caveats

The following section documents caveats that could occur with the Field Diagnostic image 1.1:

CSCeb30426

The 8-port Fast Ethernet Half-Height line card cannot load the Field Diagnostic image when the card has been shutdown using the hw-module subslot slot-number/subslot-number command. This problem only occurs when running Cisco IOS Release 12.2(16)BX.

Workaround: Use no hw-module subslot slot-number/subslot-number to activate the line card. After activating the line card, load the Field Diagnostic image onto the line card. This problem can also be avoided by upgrading to Cisco IOS Release 12.2(16)BX1 or a later Cisco IOS release.

CSCed34475

When the Field Diagnostic image is loaded onto a line card from disk0 or disk1, the router will crash. This problem only occurs on Cisco IOS Releases 12.2(16)BX and 12.2(16)BX1.

Workaround: Load the Field Diagnostic image onto the line card directly from the TFTP server.

In addition, if you have a valid Cisco service contract, Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) engineers provide telephone support. If you do not have a valid Cisco service contract, contact your reseller.

Cisco Technical Support & Documentation Website

The Cisco Technical Support & Documentation website provides online documents and tools for troubleshooting and resolving technical issues with Cisco products and technologies. The website is available 24 hours a day, at this URL:

http://www.cisco.com/techsupport

Access to all tools on the Cisco Technical Support & Documentation website requires a Cisco.com user ID and password. If you have a valid service contract but do not have a user ID or password, you can register at this URL:

http://tools.cisco.com/RPF/register/register.do

Note Use the Cisco Product Identification (CPI) tool to locate your product serial number before submitting a web or phone request for service. You can access the CPI tool from the Cisco Technical Support & Documentation website by clicking the Tools & Resources link under Documentation & Tools. Choose Cisco Product Identification Tool from the Alphabetical Index drop-down list, or click the Cisco Product Identification Tool link under Alerts & RMAs. The CPI tool offers three search options: by product ID or model name; by tree view; or for certain products, by copying and pasting show command output. Search results show an illustration of your product with the serial number label location highlighted. Locate the serial number label on your product and record the information before placing a service call.

Submitting a Service Request

Using the online TAC Service Request Tool is the fastest way to open S3 and S4 service requests. (S3 and S4 service requests are those in which your network is minimally impaired or for which you require product information.) After you describe your situation, the TAC Service Request Tool provides recommended solutions. If your issue is not resolved using the recommended resources, your service request is assigned to a Cisco engineer. The TAC Service Request Tool is located at this URL:

http://www.cisco.com/techsupport/servicerequest

For S1 or S2 service requests or if you do not have Internet access, contact the Cisco TAC by telephone. (S1 or S2 service requests are those in which your production network is down or severely degraded.) Cisco engineers are assigned immediately to S1 and S2 service requests to help keep your business operations running smoothly.

To open a service request by telephone, use one of the following numbers:

Asia-Pacific: +61 2 8446 7411 (Australia: 1 800 805 227)
EMEA: +32 2 704 55 55
USA: 1 800 553-2447

For a complete list of Cisco TAC contacts, go to this URL:

http://www.cisco.com/techsupport/contacts

Definitions of Service Request Severity

To ensure that all service requests are reported in a standard format, Cisco has established severity definitions.

Severity 1 (S1)—Your network is "down," or there is a critical impact to your business operations. You and Cisco will commit all necessary resources around the clock to resolve the situation.

Severity 2 (S2)—Operation of an existing network is severely degraded, or significant aspects of your business operation are negatively affected by inadequate performance of Cisco products. You and Cisco will commit full-time resources during normal business hours to resolve the situation.

Severity 3 (S3)—Operational performance of your network is impaired, but most business operations remain functional. You and Cisco will commit resources during normal business hours to restore service to satisfactory levels.

Severity 4 (S4)—You require information or assistance with Cisco product capabilities, installation, or configuration. There is little or no effect on your business operations.
