Preparing for Installation

This chapter contains information you need to know before you begin installing the Cisco User Control Point (UCP) software.

Before installing and configuring UCP, review the following sections:

Verifying Package Contents

The UCP package contains:

Planning for Installation

Use the following table to record pertinent information. You will need this information while installing and configuring UCP.

General Software Requirements

This section describes general software requirements for the UCP software.

Solaris platform software requirements are described in the "Software Requirements for a Sun Solaris Installation" section.

Software requirements for the Windows NT platform are described in the "Software Requirements for Windows NT" section.

Domain Name System

Your installation must use the DNS service provided with UCP. The ActiveWeb component of the UCP must perform host name resolution from a DNS server.

Database Software

In addition to the software required for the Solaris and Windows NT components, your installation must be running Oracle version 7.3.2. Ideally, your SMS should use one of the following databases supported by ActiveWeb:

Note Only Oracle 7.3.2 is verified for use with SMS.

If your SMS uses another database, you must develop specialized code to update the UCP database with information from your SMS. For information about developing such code, refer to the Cisco User Control Point Administrator Guide.

Preparing for Solaris Installation

This section describes the hardware and software requirements for:

Sun Solaris Hardware Requirements

This section describes the hardware requirements for installing UCP at a service provider NOC and at a point of presence (POP). It also describes the hardware requirements for the CiscoSecure ACS.

Hardware Requirements for a NOC Installation of UCP

For a NOC installation, UCP requires the following hardware:

At a NOC, the ActiveWeb Information Broker, each DNS service (primary and secondary), each Data Store, and each mother cache (primary and secondary) must either be installed on a separate host or have at least one processor on which to run.

Hardware Requirements for a POP Installation of UCP

For a POP installation, UCP requires the following hardware:

Note If you use ADSL, you must install a Cisco 6510 Service Selection Gateway at the POP.
Hardware Requirements for Individual Solaris Systems

If you will run UCP at your POP on individual Solaris systems, Cisco recommends that each system be configured as follows:

Hardware Requirements for CiscoSecure

The CiscoSecure ACS must be installed for UCP to function correctly. UCP requires the following hardware:

Software Requirements for a Sun Solaris Installation

Installation of UCP on a Sun Solaris platform requires Sun Solaris version 2.5.1 with patches 103566-25, 103600-18, and 103640-14. To check the patch level, use the command showrev -p.

Preparing the Primary Host for Installation

Before installing UCP components on the Sun Solaris host, make sure:

Preparing for Windows NT Installation

The NCC component of UCP runs on a Windows NT workstation or server. This section describes the hardware and software requirements for a Windows NT system running the NCC.

Cisco recommends that you install the NCC on a "clean" Windows NT system---one that does not have other applications installed on it.

Hardware Requirements for Windows NT

To run the NCC on a Windows NT system, you must have:

Software Requirements for Windows NT

The Windows NT system running the NCC must be running Windows NT version 4.0 or higher with service pack V1.0.
