About This Manual

The IGS Hardware Installation and Reference covers the initial hardware installation procedures for the Cisco Systems IGS network server product. It will guide you through the initial hardware installation, startup, and modification of your IGS system. Instructions are also provided for replacing Erasable Programmable Read-only Memory (EPROMs) integrated circuits and Single Inline Memory Modules (SIMMs), and for constructing your own serial cables.

Audience and Scope

The IGS Hardware Installation and Reference is directed to the person who is responsible for the installing and maintaining the Cisco IGSTM network server. To use this guide, you should be familiar with electronic circuitry and wiring practices, and preferably have experience as an electronic or electromechanical technician.For a tutorial on initial software configuration, refer to the Cisco Router Products Getting Started document. For more advanced configuration applications, refer to the Cisco Router Products Configuration and Reference.

Document Organization and Use

The IGS Hardware Installation and Reference provides information for installing and modifying a Cisco IGS/L or IGS/R system.

Document Conventions

This manual uses the following conventions to convey instructions and information:

Screen type shows information displayed on a terminal screen.

Boldface type highlights command names within the text.

Italicized type is used to show command variables, to emphasize new terms, for special emphasis, and for the titles of books and periodicals.

A string is defined as a nonquoted set of characters. The following is a set of instructions and an example showing correct usage. Note that while instructed to answer "yes," the correct input excludes use of quotes.

Example:

When you invoke the setup command from the EXEC, a prompt will ask if you want to "continue with the configuration dialog" before going into the interactive process. Another "yes" to continue; answer "no" to quit out of the program.
