Quick Start Guide

Cisco IP/TV

1 Getting Started

To quickly set up IP/TV and begin defining on-demand and scheduled programs, follow these step-by-step instructions.

IP/TV has three components: IP/TV Program Manager, IP/TV Server, and IP/TV Viewer.

IP/TV Program Manager sets up and manages scheduled and on-demand programs, recordings, and file transfers between servers.

IP/TV Program Manager runs on the Cisco Application and Content Networking System (ACNS) software and comes installed on some models of Cisco Content Engine hardware. IP/TV Program Manager, which is a device mode of the Cisco Content Engine, facilitates IP/TV-ACNS network interaction. For information on setting up IP/TV-ACNS network interoperability, see the "Making IP/TV Part of an ACNS Network" section.

IP/TV Server transmits scheduled and on-demand programs, records scheduled programs, and performs file transfers. You can set up a backup server for live capture and recording failover if your network has two IP/TV Servers with capture cards that support the same codec.

The IP/TV Server component is available as software-only or comes installed on Cisco IP/TV 3400 Series Server hardware.

IP/TV Viewer displays a list of scheduled and on-demand programs, and plays the programs that users subscribe to or request.

The IP/TV Viewer component is available as software-only.

2 Setting Up IP/TV Components

Choose the computer on which you want to install IP/TV Server and note its host name. You must also note the host name of the Content Engine running IP/TV Program Manager.

Setting up IP/TV components involves the following:

Setting Up IP/TV Server

Configuring IP/TV Program Manager

Setting Up IP/TV Viewer

A sample media file is installed with IP/TV Server. If you set up the IP/TV components correctly and define the sample program in IP/TV Program Manager, you can view the sample program in IP/TV Viewer.

Setting Up IP/TV Server

To set up IP/TV Server, follow these steps:

Step 1 Install IP/TV Server.

Refer to the Cisco IP/TV Broadcast Server User Guide for instructions.

Note This step is not necessary if you have Cisco IP/TV 3400 Series Server hardware.

Step 2 Download Apple QuickTime Version 6 or later from the Apple website, and install it on the computer running IP/TV Server.

Refer to the "Installing Apple QuickTime Components" section in Chapter 2 of the Cisco IP/TV Broadcast Server User Guide for more information.

Step 3 Configure IP/TV Server to receive program information from IP/TV Program Manager.

a. Double-click the Cisco IP/TV Server shortcut on the desktop.

b. Choose Settings > Configure IP/TV Server.

c. In the IP/TV PM Host field of the Server tab, enter the host name of IP/TV Program Manager and click OK.

Configuring IP/TV Program Manager

To configure the Content Engine to work as IP/TV Program Manager, follow these steps:

Step 1 Power up the Content Engine and open a console connection.

Step 2 Configure the network settings for the Content Engine. Refer to Chapter 2 of the Cisco ACNS Software Program Manager for IP/TV User Guide for instructions.

Step 3 Set the device mode of the Content Engine to IP/TV Program Manager by entering the following global configuration command:

content-engine(config)# device mode program-manager

Step 4 Reboot the Content Engine for the change in device mode to take effect.

Step 5 From your browser, access IP/TV Program Manager at the following URL:

http://programmanagerhost/

where programmanagerhost is the DNS name or IP address of IP/TV Program Manager.

Note The default username is admin, and the default password is default.

Step 6 Define IP/TV Servers.

a. In the IP/TV Program Manager main window, click the Server Clusters link.

b. In the Server Clusters window, click the New Server link in the banner bar.

c. In the New Server window, enter the server information and click Add Server.

Step 7 In the IP/TV Program Manager main window, click the ServerWatch link and then check the status of the server that you defined.

Setting Up IP/TV Viewer

To set up IP/TV Viewer, follow these steps:

Step 1 Install IP/TV Viewer.

Refer to Chapter 2 of the Cisco IP/TV Viewer User Guide for details.

Step 2 Configure IP/TV Viewer to receive program information from IP/TV Program Manager.

a. Open IP/TV Viewer.

b. Choose Settings > Program Managers.

c. Click Add Program Manager.

d. In the Primary Server pane of the Program Manager Settings dialog box, enter the host name of IP/TV Program Manager and click OK twice.

3 Making IP/TV Part of an ACNS Network

To set up IP/TV to interoperate with an ACNS network, follow these steps.

Note Ignore this section if you are setting up a standalone IP/TV application.

Step 1 In the Preferences window of IP/TV Program Manager, enter the ACNS network information in the ACNS Network Information section.

Step 2 From the Content Distribution Manager GUI, do these tasks:

a. Create an ACNS network website with IP/TV Program Manager as the origin server for IP/TV programs.

b. Create an ACNS network channel associated with an ACNS network website that has IP/TV Program Manager as the origin server.

Note For streaming of IP/TV on-demand programs over an ACNS network, you must have transparent redirection set up for on-demand RTSP (Real-Time Streaming Protocol) traffic on your ACNS network. For transparent redirection of content, you can use content routing, Web Cache Communication Protocol (WCCP), or a Content Services Switch (CSS). For more information, refer to the Cisco ACNS Software Configuration Guide for Centrally Managed Deployments.

Step 3 On Cisco FTP Server running on IP/TV Server, configure host access privileges for the root Content Engine and other Content Engines.

Refer to Appendix B of the Cisco ACNS Software Program Manager for IP/TV User Guide for detailed information on setting up IP/TV to interoperate with an ACNS network.

4 Creating an On-Demand Program

To create an on-demand program, follow these steps:

Step 1 In the IP/TV Program Manager main window, click the OnDemand Programs link. The OnDemand Programs window appears.

Step 2 Click the New Program link in the banner bar. If IP/TV is configured as part of an ACNS network, the ACNS Network Information section of the New OnDemand Program window appears. If IP/TV is set up as a standalone application, IP/TV takes you to Step 4.

Step 3 If you want to export the program to an ACNS network, choose the names of the ACNS network website and channel with which you want to associate this program and then click Create Program. Otherwise, leave both fields blank and click Create Program.

Step 4 Enter the on-demand program information.

a. In the Program Name field, enter Sample Program.

b. In the Multimedia Information section, click Select media file and choose the sample.avi file.

c. In the Contact section, enter contact information.

d. Click Add OnDemand Program.

Step 5 View the program.

a. Open IP/TV Viewer.

b. Double-click the OnDemand Videos category.

c. Double-click Sample Program.

If you have installed the IP/TV components correctly, the sample on-demand program begins to play in the IP/TV Viewer window.

Refer to the "Creating a New On-Demand Program" section in Chapter 5 of the Cisco ACNS Software Program Manager for IP/TV User Guide for detailed information about on-demand programs.

5 Creating a Scheduled Program

To create a scheduled program, follow these steps:

Step 1 In the IP/TV Program Manager main window, click the Scheduled Programs link. The Scheduled Programs window appears.

Step 2 Click the New Program link in the banner bar. If IP/TV is configured as part of an ACNS network, the ACNS Network Information section of the New Scheduled Program window appears. If IP/TV is set up as a standalone application, IP/TV takes you directly to Step 4.

Step 3 If you want to export the program to an ACNS network, choose the names of the ACNS network website and channel with which you want to associate this program and then click Create Program. Otherwise, leave both fields blank and click Create Program.

Step 4 Leave the Channel set to None, choose Basic Media File Program, and click Create Program.
