Quick Start
for IP/TV Release 5.1

1 Getting Started

To quickly set up IP/TV and begin defining on-demand and scheduled programs, follow these step-by-step instructions.

IP/TV has three separate components: IP/TV Program Manager, IP/TV Server, and IP/TV Viewer.

IP/TV Program Manager sets up and manages scheduled and on-demand programs, recordings, and file transfers between servers.

The IP/TV Program Manager component is a Linux-based application that comes installed on Cisco Content Engine hardware (CE-565 and CE-7305). To set up IP/TV Program Manager on your network, you must install the Content Engine on your network, configure the network settings, and change the device mode of the Content Engine to IP/TV Program Manager.

IP/TV Server transmits scheduled and on-demand programs, records scheduled programs, and performs file transfers.

The IP/TV Server comes installed on Cisco IP/TV 3400 Series Server hardware.

IP/TV Viewer displays a list of scheduled and on-demand programs, and plays the programs that users subscribe to or request.

The IP/TV Viewer component is available as software-only.

2 Setting Up IP/TV Components

Determine the computers on which you will install IP/TV Server and note their host names. You must also note the host name of the Content Engine running IP/TV Program Manager.

Setting up IP/TV components involves the following:

Setting Up IP/TV Server

Configuring IP/TV Program Manager

Setting Up IP/TV Viewer

A sample media file is installed with IP/TV Server. If you set up the IP/TV components correctly and define the sample program in IP/TV Program Manager, you can view the sample program in IP/TV Viewer.

Setting Up IP/TV Server

To set up IP/TV Server:

Step 1 Install IP/TV Server.

Refer to the Cisco IP/TV Broadcast Server User Guide for instructions.

Note This step is not necessary if you have Cisco IP/TV 3400 Series Server hardware.

Step 2 Download Apple QuickTime Version 6 or later from the Apple website, and install it on the computer running IP/TV Server.

Refer to the "Installing Apple QuickTime Components" section in Chapter 2 of the Cisco IP/TV Broadcast Server User Guide for more information.

Step 3 Configure IP/TV Server to receive program information from IP/TV Program Manager.

a. Double-click the Cisco IP/TV Server shortcut on the desktop.

To configure the Content Engine to work as IP/TV Program Manager:

Step 1 Power up the Content Engine and open a console connection.

Step 2 Configure the network settings for the Content Engine.

Refer to Chapter 2 of the Cisco ACNS Software Program Manager for IP/TV User Guide for instructions.

Step 3 Set the device mode of the Content Engine to IP/TV Program Manager by entering the following global configuration command:

content-engine(config)# device mode program-manager

Step 4 From your browser, access IP/TV Program Manager at the following URL:

http://programmanagerhost/

where programmanagerhost is the DNS name or IP address of IP/TV Program Manager.

Note The default username is admin, and the default password is default.

5 Making IP/TV Part of an ACNS Network

IP/TV interoperates with an ACNS network running Cisco ACNS software. IP/TV Program Manager runs on Cisco Content Engine hardware and facilitates interaction with ACNS software. Integration with an ACNS network allows IP/TV users to make use of the content delivery features of ACNS software for effective bandwidth usage.

To set up IP/TV to interoperate with an ACNS network, follow these steps:

Step 1 In the Preferences window of IP/TV Program Manager, enter the ACNS network information in the CDN Information section.

Step 2 From the Content Distribution Manager GUI, do the following:

a. Create an ACNS network website with IP/TV Program Manager as the origin server for IP/TV programs.

b. Create an ACNS network channel with an ACNS network website that has IP/TV Program Manager as the origin server.

Note To distribute IP/TV programs over the ACNS network, you need ACNS network websites and channels that use IP/TV Program Manager as the origin server.

Step 3 On Cisco FTP Server, running on IP/TV Broadcast Server, configure host access privileges for the root Content Engine and other Content Engines.

Refer to Appendix C of the Cisco ACNS Software Program Manager for IP/TV User Guide for detailed information on setting up IP/TV to interoperate with an ACNS network.
