Introduction

These release notes summarize the functions of the Cisco MGX 8240 Private Line Service Gateway switch software, Release 3.0. These notes describe new features and enhancements as well as a list of known caveats that have been fixed and verified since the previous deployed Release (2.2.0.6). The document also lists open caveats.

These notes are intended for customer functional and operational groups and Cisco System Engineers responsible for installing and provisioning the Cisco MGX 8240 Private Line Service Gateway.

New and Changed Information

Release 3.0 contains the following new features:

Release 3.0 does not support in-band management.

Upgraded Products

The present release of 3.0 switch software is installed on cards in the factory, along with the CPE/PSM hardware. Upgrades from previous versions of software are not supported.

Release 3.0 PSM software requires Release 3.0 IMC software and Release 3.0 VCLI software.

Caveats

Resolved Caveats - Release 3.0

The following bugs that existed in Release 2.2.0.6 have been fixed and verified in Release 3.0

DDTS Number SeveritySeveSrity Functional Area Problem Description Corrected

CSCdp56732

High

BERT

Creating loopbacks on circuits that are under BERT testing causes future connections on that port to fail creation. Also, half-created or half deleted circuits cannot be fully deleted due to erroneous check.

Creating local loopbacks on circuits under BERT is now blocked.

CSCdp93716

High

Redundancy

Race condition in performing forceback can cause lost configuration.

Race condition is resolved with extra synchronization.

Open Caveats—Release 3.0

Cisco MGX 8240 CPE/CS3 Switch software (Release 3.0) has some known problems. Every attempt has been made to resolve the problems of high severity. Below are the known problems that remain, including all outstanding problems related to the CES modules and associated I/O ports.

DDTS Number SeveritySeveSrity Functional Area Problem Description Workaround/Corrected

CSCdr05715

Low

Connection management

The delete connection -epid all command may not delete all circuits on the card, if the SNMP Timeout VCLI is less than 30 seconds

Retry the command until all connections are deleted.

Or

Increase SNMP Timeout to 30 seconds.

CSCdp84400

Low

Port management

When the admin state of a physical port (ds3 or ds1) changes from test to up or from up to test, there may be a momentary loss of frames.

No workaround. The impact is low, because user traffic is not running when the port is put into test mode.

CSCdr25821

Low

Craft interface

From a PC or VT-100 terminal, the CMDR on the PSM does not work the same as theCMDR on the IMC. Telnet to an IMC CMDR. But during Telnet to a PSM CMDR, the keyboard does not work the same. When the user types a letter at the login prompt, the password prompt appears.

Use the IMC CMDR to connect to the PSM CMDR. Or use Xterm instead of VT-100 on PC.

CSCdp91196

Low

SNTP

The switch does not validate the primary or secondary server IP address for the Network time protocol. The effect of having an invalid IP address is like having an unreachable IP address.

No workaround

CSCdp95989

Catastrophic

Craft interface

It is possible to set the PSM card's external IP address from a CMDR menu.

With Release 3.0, the user is not required to configure the CPI IP address.

No workaround

CSCdr26633

Low

Device drivers

With the current hardware, a switched-in backup PSM card cannot detect the insertion, removal or mismatch of a switched-in I/O card.

No workaround

CSCdr53103

Low

Connection Management

To create a local pl connection on a PSM card, switch software will create two endpoints side-by-side, and cross-connect them. In the current system, one endpoint (half pl connection) could remain in the system if the second endpoint is not created.

Use VCLI command show connection to list the connections on a physical port. Normally, for a local pl connection, 2 endpoints will show. Whenonly one endpoint is listed for a physical port, the user can delete the listed end point.

CSCdr 53118

Low

Connection management

To create a local pl connection on a PSM card, switch software will create two bearer channels for two endpoints, then create internal connection for the bearer channels. As long as a bearer channel is completely created, the swit ch will never back it up unless a user or management application deletes it.

Use the VCLI command show connection to list the connections on a physical port. When this scenario occurs, the connections operational state will be stuck in internal connection down, when it should be up (that is, the admin state will be up, and there are no physical alarms present).

CSCdr47002

Low

Hardware

The hardware does not support Partial Fill values from 20 - 23. for a ds1 channelized ds1 circuit with ESF framing, internal timing and B*ZS coding, traffic runs fine with 24 ,= pf ,= 47. But traffic drops from pf = 20-23 inclusive. This problem is found with both DS3 modes (M23 and Cbit)

Sn04752

Low

Switch Craft Interface

Double ESC required to exit from DS1 statistics window on Craft Interface.

Same as 1.1.1.2

Sn05554

High

FE Loopback

If the user manipulates the far-end DS1 loop modes more rapidly than the 1.5 second (the loop send code duration time), the far-end Larscom CSU/DSU and the Cisco MGX 8240 DS1 port are both in a loop up mode. Once this happens, the loop down command issued from Sentient NMS is unable to take Larscom CSU/DSU out of a loop.

Workaround:

    1. On NMS go to the port's Near End Loopback. Invoke a Near End Loopback, then drop the loop.

    2. Go to the Far End Loopback and invoke the loop first and then drop it.

Bug found in 1.1.2.10

Dm93724

Low

IO card state

With the introduction of a new IO card type, if a blade is booted without an IO card connected in the back slot, the switch will declare an alarm. Other attributes cannot give accurate information without an IO card present.

The switch expects that an IO card is present when the blade is booted.

Cisco Connection Online

Cisco Connection Online (CCO) is Cisco Systems' primary, real-time support channel. Maintenance customers and partners can self-register on CCO to obtain additional information and services.

Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, CCO provides a wealth of standard and value-added services to Cisco's customers and business partners. CCO services include product information, product documentation, software updates, release notes, technical tips, the Bug Navigator, configuration notes, brochures, descriptions of service offerings, and download access to public and authorized files.

CCO serves a wide variety of users through two interfaces that are updated and enhanced simultaneously: a character-based version and a multimedia version that resides on the World Wide Web (WWW). The character-based CCO supports Zmodem, Kermit, Xmodem, FTP, and Internet e-mail, and it is excellent for quick access to information over lower bandwidths. The WWW version of CCO provides richly formatted documents with photographs, figures, graphics, and video, as well as hyperlinks to related information.

You can access CCO in the following ways:
