About this Manual

This chapter gives instructions for installing Release 2.2 of the VCLI with the Cisco MGX 8240 Private Line Service Gateway. Release 2.2 is backwards compatible with all software releases of the MGX 8240 prior to 2.2.x.

Introduction

The Virtual Command Line Interface (VCLI) allows operators to configure, control, and monitor Cisco's MGX 8240 switches. Through the VCLI, operators can configure the switch, provision circuits, monitor network status and statistics, and test DS1 ports and connections. As well as controlling the MGX 8240, the VCLI can provision ATM circuits across a network by interfacing with the Provisioning Client software.

The VCLI is a character-based program run from a UNIX shell. Many instances of the VCLI program can run simultaneously on the same or different UNIX workstation(s).

Other Management Access to the MGX 8240

The VCLI is one of two means of managing the MGX 8240. The other is the card-level Craft Interface. The VCLI works separately from the Craft Interface, but performs many of the same functions.

The VCLI commands are similar to those used on the MGX 8240 Craft Interface. Differences included the following:

Because the VCLI manages more than the Craft Interface does, the VCLI:

The additional VCLI commands make it possible to provision:

Features of Release 2.2.6

This release

It is possible to install the VCLI before installing the MGX 8240. However, doing so would allow the administrator only to assign users and look at Help screens. Before using the VCLI to manage the switch, you must have installed the MGX 8240.

Hardware and Software Requirements

To use the VCLI, operators must have a Sun Solaris 2.5.1 or 2.6 workstation. The workstation must also have the Provisioning Server Application Toolkit (Provisioning Client) CLI software installed and working.

Cisco Connection Online

Cisco Connection Online (CCO) is Cisco Systems' primary, real-time support channel. Maintenance customers and partners can self-register on CCO to obtain additional information and services.

Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, CCO provides a wealth of standard and value-added services to Cisco's customers and business partners. CCO services include product information, product documentation, software updates, release notes, technical tips, the Bug Navigator, configuration notes, brochures, descriptions of service offerings, and download access to public and authorized files.

CCO serves a wide variety of users through two interfaces that are updated and enhanced simultaneously: a character-based version and a multimedia version that resides on the World Wide Web (WWW). The character-based CCO supports Zmodem, Kermit, Xmodem, FTP, and Internet e-mail, and it is excellent for quick access to information over lower bandwidths. The WWW version of CCO provides richly formatted documents with photographs, figures, graphics, and video, as well as hyperlinks to related information.
