Product Description

Compatibility

The Access Product Supervisor (APS) is a network management system designed for use with StrataCom FastPADmp, FastPADlmp, and FastPADmpr products, software Version 10.2 or later. APS is compatible with StrataView Plus Version 8.0 or later for operation on the same workstation.

APS consists of proprietary software running on a UNIX platform, under HP OpenView, along with the Motif graphical user interface (GUI). The UNIX platform is currently provided by a SUN Microsystems workstation. Required compatible software is HP OpenView Windows Version 3.31 and HP OpenView Network Node Manager Version 3.31.

Workstation Requirements

Standalone Operation

For standalone operation, APS may be installed on a SPARCstation 5, 10, or 20. Minimum requirements are as follows:

* Optional high speed interface is recommended for enhanced operation of APS.

Co-resident with StrataView Plus Operation

If APS is to be installed co-resident with StrataView Plus, then StrataView Plus must be installed first. Refer to the StrataView Plus Installation Guide for StrataView Plus workstation requirements, then add the following additional requirements to support APS:

* Optional high speed interface is recommended for enhanced operation of APS.

APS Software Requirements

The APS Network Management Workstation requires the following software elements:

Operation

APS is used by network administrators to manage FastPADmp nodes from the HP OpenView environment. Features are described below.

You may add new nodes to HPOV submaps by creating a new object in HP OpenView or you can allow autodiscovery add them. APS places new symbols in the HP OpenView symbol palette for this purpose. The new symbols are the FastPADmp Network symbol, (used as a "container" for submaps containing other FastPADmp Network or FastPAD node symbols) and FastPAD node symbols. These symbols can be added to any HP OpenView submap.

Alarms from FastPADmp nodes are shown by setting the status of the corresponding HP OpenView symbol appropriately. Symbol status propagates from FastPADmp node symbols to parent symbols representing the submap as configured in HP OpenView by the administrator. Alarms also appear as events in the HP OpenView event logger.

The FastPADmp subnet is monitored by polling the FastPADmp nodes. The polling mode and interval are configurable on a per-node basis. Each time a node is polled, the corresponding HP OpenView object is updated with any changed information.

To upload and download node configurations, the File Transfer module is accessible from a menu in the HP OpenView menu hierarchy.

Relationship with StrataView Plus

Since StrataView Plus 8.0 and the FastPADmp Network Management System are both HP OpenView applications, integration of the two systems is straightforward and is done using the standard HP OpenView facilities. StrataView Plus and APS symbols can co-exist on the same submap. This allows the user to place APS symbols adjacent to StrataView Plus symbols on a geographical submap.

StrataView Plus and APS symbols can be connected using the standard HPOV method for adding connections (these connections are not managed by either StrataView Plus or APS, however). HP OpenView's default status propagation rules mean that the status of a submap containing StrataView Plus and APS symbols is propagated to the parent map.

APS Release 12.2 Features

APS Release 12.2 provides the following network management capabilities:
