Technically, it is a Common Channel Interoffice Signaling (CCIS) parameter referring to the number transmitted on an out-of-band basis through an SS7 signaling network identifying the calling party's telephone number. Registration, Admission, and Status Protocol. RAS is defined in the H.225 ITU-T Recommendation. RAS is used to communicate between gateways, endpoints, and gatekeeper. RAS is also used to communicate between two gatekeepers.
Registration: A function of the gateway to the gatekeeper to inform the gatekeeper about information pertinent to the gateway. The information is: E.164 number assigned to the POTS port of the gateway, H.323 Alias, and technology prefix.
Admission: A function of the gateway to request the gatekeeper for E.164 number to IP address translation.
Status: A function of the gateway to inform the gatekeeper about an active call.
