About This Manual

This section introduces the audience and scope, organization, and use and conventions of the Cisco Protocol Translator Configuration and Reference publication.

Audience and Scope

This publication addresses two audiences: first, it provides details on how users can make connections to network resources using a CiscoTM protocol translator; second, this manual provides information needed by the system administrator for configuring and maintaining a Cisco protocol translator running Release 9.0 and earlier software (software changes from previous releases are in the release note accompanying this manual).

Document Organization and Use

The Protocol Translator Configuration and Reference publication provides information about using and configuring the Cisco protocol translator--use and administration of the system interface, system configuration, and network configuration. This manual, an appropriate Hardware Installation and Reference publication, and a software release note are included with each Cisco protocol translator system.

This publication is divided into five main parts. Each part, separated by dividers, is comprised of chapters describing related tasks or functions, as follows:

Caution is a special paragraph that means reader be careful. It means that you are capable of doing something that might result in equipment damage, or worse, that you might have to take something apart and start over again.
