Using TrueView Alert Manager

Using TrueView Alert Manager

This chapter provides information about using TrueView Alert Manager to manage alerts on the network.

About Alert Manager

TrueView Alert Manager is supplied with the TrueView network management platform and enables you to configure events associated with devices on the network. When the event occurs, Alert Manager responds according to the options that you define.

TrueView Alert Manager enables you to:

For information about installing and configuring Alert Manager, see Chapter 2, "Installing TrueView Applications".

Managing Alerts

TrueView Alert Manager enables you to manage alerts associated with devices on the network for which you have installed TrueView management software. For example, if you install TrueView Catalyst 1600 Manager, you can configure alerts relating to the Catalyst 1600 Token Ring switch.

Managing the List of Alerts

You can view a list of the alerts that have been logged by Alert Manager.

To view a list of alerts, double-click on the Alert Manager icon.

Figure 8-1: Alert Manager Icon

When you double-click on the Alert Manager icon, Alert Manager displays the Alerts dialog box, and updates the list as it logs new alerts.

Viewing the Alerts dialog box

You can view a table of logged alerts in the Alerts dialog box.

In the Alert Manager Table, you can:

The columns in the dialog box are described in Table 8-1.

Table  8-1: Columns in the Alerts Dialog Box
Column Description
Index The number that Alert Manager assigns to each alert.
Time The time the event occurred.
Date The date the event occurred.
Source The type of device that originated the alert.
Device Name The name of the device that originated the alert.
Event The type of event that generated the alert.

Pausing the List of Alerts

If the last acknowledged alert at the foot of the list of alerts is visible, the list scrolls automatically as new alerts are logged. You can use the pause function to prevent the list from scrolling.

To pause the list of alerts, either enable the Pause check box or click on the up arrow on the scroll bar until the last acknowledged alert is no longer visible.

To enable the list of alerts to scroll as new alerts are logged, either disable the Pause check box or click on the down arrow on the scroll bar until the last acknowledged alert is visible.

Resetting the Alerts

You can clear the list of alerts by clicking on the Reset button.

After you reset the alert list, new alerts will be logged from the top of the table.

Configuring the Alert Options

You can specify the way in which Alert Manager handles each type of event that can occur. For example, you can specify that each time a node is disabled on a LAM port, Alert Manager logs the alert, displays a popup window, or plays a wave file.

To configure the alert options:

Step 1 Double-click on the Alert Manager icon.

The Alerts dialog box is displayed.

Step 2 Click on the Options button.

The Alert options dialog box displays a list of possible events, and the options that are configured for each event.

Step 3 Click on the events you want to configure. Click on the All button to select all the events, or the None button to select none of the events.

The selected events are highlighted.

Step 4 Click on the Change button.

The Change alert options dialog box is displayed.

When you change the options for multiple events that have different settings, the settings that are different are shown by a grey check box in the Alert options dialog box.

Note If the Log option is not selected, Alert Manager does not perform any other options that you select.

The alert options are described in Table 8-2.

Table  8-2: Fields in the Change Alert Options Dialog Box
Option Description
Beep Makes a beep sound through the PC speaker. Note that a speaker driver needs to be installed.
Popup If the Alerts dialog box is not displayed, a popup window is shown. If a popup window is already displayed when a new alert occurs, the new alert waits until the popup window closes before appearing. The popup window displays the number of pending alerts.
Log Logs the alert in the alert list.
Play Plays a wave file. If you have suitable hardware and driver software installed, a wave file (.WAV) plays when the selected alert or alerts occur. Specify the sound file in the Edit field to the right of the check box. If you leave this blank, TrueView Alert Manager searches for a sound file with a default name based on the alert. Sample wave files with these default names are supplied with TrueView Alert Manager, for certain devices.

If the repeat option is enabled when the alert occurs, the sound plays repeatedly until the alert is seen by the user in the main alert list or in the popup window.

Run Specifies that a program runs when the selected alert or alerts occur. For example, the program might dial a radio pager via a modem, or send out a message over the network.

If the multiple option is enabled when several alerts occur, several copies of the specified program may run together. If this option is not enable, at most one copy of the program runs at any one time. Note that this applies only to native Windows applications; multiple DOS prompts may always run regardless of the state of this option.

Locating a Port that has Logged an Alert

If an alert references a node port address, you can locate and display the Port dialog box for the device.

Only alerts that are specific to a port and include the node address in the event column can be located.

To locate the port that has logged an alert:

Step 1 Double-click on the Alert Manager icon.

The Alerts dialog box is displayed.

Step 2 Select the alert logged for a node.

The selected alert is highlighted.

Step 3 Click on the Find button in the Alert dialog box.

The device on which the node port is located is displayed, with the Port dialog box, which displays the current state of the node port.
