The term Synchronous Optical NETwork (SONET) is primarily used instead of Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) throughout this guide. However, these two terms are somewhat interchangeable. The EM supports both SDH and SONET in the same manner.
The American National Standards Institution (ANSI) defines SONET and it is used in North America.
The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) defines SDH and it is now used everywhere outside of North America and Japan. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) standardized SDH.
