Introduction
Cisco Broadband Access Center for Broadband Aggregation (BAC BA) provides network management support for broadband access and aggregation environments by enabling you to provision devices, resources, services, and subscribers. You can implement BAC BA in small to very large scale deployments. The distributed nature of the software supports its deployment in a variety of environments and with a variety of services and technologies.
What's New in This Release
The BAC BA 2.6 software enhances the product in these areas:
•Creating permanent virtual connection (PVC) performance
•Adding new capabilities to the northbound application program interface:
–CORBA implemented using Orbix 2000
–ScopeGet with cursor
–Synchronization with filtering
•Using the Web UI now includes
–Delete PVC button on the Device Management page
–New subtabs under the Devices and Subscribers tabs for inventory and provisioning purposes
–A stationary Object Selector
–NewSynchronization subtab on the Devices main tab
System Requirements
BAC BA has the following system requirements:
•BAC BA server—SunFire 280R or equivalent, running the Solaris 8 operating system, with an Oracle 8.1.7 server already installed.
•BAC BA Web user interface—To run the BAC BA user interface requires a workstation running Windows 2000 or Windows NT 4.0 and Internet Explorer 6.0 or greater.
•BAC BA API—Orbix or Orbix Web, running ASP 6.0 (Orbix 2000).
•Solaris 8 operating system patches—To run BAC BA requires:
–Patch 112438, revision 01 or later
–Patch 108827, revision 12 or later
–Patch 108434, revision 08 or later
–Patch 108435, revision 08 or later
You may also apply any later patches that supersede those listed.
Hardware and Software Supported
BAC BA was tested and validated on the hardware, Cisco IOS software, and network cards described in Table 1.
Web Server Notes
When you install the BAC BA server, you are also installing a Web server. The server starts automatically when you run ./bacStartup all. Before you can access the Web UI, however, if you have installed the Java Virtual Machine, you might need to reconfigure Internet Explorer as follows:
Step 1 Open Internet Explorer.
Step 2 From the Tools menu, select Internet Options. The browser displays the Internet Options dialog box.
Step 3 Click Advanced. The browser displays a list of advanced settings.
Step 4 Scroll through the list to determine if this setting is checked:
Java (Sun): Use Java <some version number> for <applet> (requires restart)
Step 5 If it is checked, then click to disable this setting.
Step 6 Click Apply and OK.
Step 7 Close Internet Explorer, then reopen it.
Step 8 To access the Web UI, in the Address field of the browser enter the URL for BACBA; for example, enter the following:
http://<web_servername>:8888/bac
Limitations and Restrictions
The following are limitations and restrictions with BAC BA:
•Cisco routers generate different patterns for warning and error messages. BAC BA sometimes interprets a message from a router as a warning when actually there has been a failure. To refine the way that BAC BA responds to these messages, edit the IOSParser.config file. This file is located in the /opt/CSCObacss/common directory.
In the following example, a router encounters a duplicate VLAN ID and generates the following message:
"%Configureation of multiple subinterfaces of the same main interface with the same VID (xx) is not permitted. This VID is already configured on interface FastEthernet0/0.xx"
BAC BA receives this as a warning and treats the operation as a success, but the VLAN ID was not configured on the router. Thus, the operation failed. To fix the problem, update the keyword in the IOSParser.config file in /opt/CSCObacss/common directory. In the VLAN ID example, the update would appear as follows:

•If you make changes to BAC BA that affect either of the following files, you must refresh the BAC BA server:
–VcSystemProperties.xml
–VcSupportedDeviceList.xml
The VcSystemProperties.xml file affects the following:
–Terminal server support for SSH
–Whether BAC BA displays the Data Viewer
–Default number of objects displayed in a scopeGet operation (default is 500)
–The maximum life time of the Oracle cursor (default is 10 minutes)
–The maximum number of nodes displayed per level in the Object Selector
–Log Viewer availability
–The number of PVCs that BAC BA displays
The VcSupportedDeviceList.xml file contains all information related to device creation. The model list field and subtype field obtain their values from this file. This file also determines whether a device supports SSH or discovery.
Caution Although the Web UI provides a Refresh Servers option from the Tools tab, do not use it in the circumstances described in this section. To obtain the desired results, use the procedure that follows.
To refresh servers, follow these steps:
Step 1 At the command line, change directory (cd) to /opt/CSCObacss/scripts.
Step 2 At the prompt, enter the following:
./serverControl.sh
Step 3 At the prompt, select 3 (refresh).
Step 4 At the prompt, select 5 (IM).
Step 5 Press Enter or Return, when the following prompt is displayed:
Enter a data for refresh (empty ok):
Caveats
This section highlights the major bugs unresolved and resolved in Broadband Access Center, with a brief description of each one. The complete list of resolved and unresolved bugs is available at the Cisco.com software download site for BAC BA. The list is also available on the product distribution in HTML format.
Known Bugs in This Release
This section presents some of the known bugs in this release. For the full list of known bugs in BACBA 2.6, see the Cisco.com software download site for Broadband Access Center 2.6 or the BACBA26_Bug_List.html on the distribution media.
CSCdz11362—If you enter Configuration Engine resources in BACBA and they are not named sequentially in the cdm.properties file, BAC BA returns the following error:
status code: 2029
Failed to create initial config entry for router [172.29.145.93] in rain maker
[IE2100_5].
For example, if one Configuration Engine resource has the hostname IE2100_0, you cannot enter as the next resource one with the hostname IE2100_5. The cdm.properties file requires that these resources be numbered named in unbroken sequence.
CSCea68676— When you restart BAC BA servers are restarted, you must restart any remote web servers associated with the BAC BA servers. If you do not restart the web servers, they receive authentication errors. This caveat applies to SPE servers as well. This applies particularly to the SPE component of BAC BA because it does not support persistent connections.
CSCeb37878—If you manually add a single PVC that requires the private lan ip route command to a router and you omit that command, you cannot later delete the PVC from BAC BA. The upload and synchronization utility adds the PVC to BAC using the information configured with the CPE IP route command, but to delete the PVC requires a work around. To work around this issue, configure both the LAN IP route and the CPE IP route on the router. Used the Deployed download method to delete the PVCs, then resynchronize the router with the BAC BA server.
CSCed13686— When you provision a point-to-point single PVC from BAC BA and download it to the router successfully, you will receive a download error if you later try to provision a multipoint single PVC on the same subinterface. The subinterface is already configured for point-to-point. However, some multipoint single PVC commands will override the point-to-point already provisioned. To work around this issue, use the BAC BA Template Manager to add validation logic.
CSCed67217— You can successfully manually add an unnumbered single PVC service feature to the BAC BA database by providing values for the PVC and VCClass fields even if you do not give a value for the unnumbered interface. The BAC BA upload and synchronization utility only validates the PVC and VCClass values. If you attempt to unprovision this service feature later, it fails with an error such as:
interface $ATM point-to-point
no description ....
no pvc $VPI/$VCI
no ip address $system_ip_address ..... // router complains "invalid cli" here.
This occurs because the running configuration file incomplete. To workaround this issue, delete the PVC from the BAC BA database using the Deployed_Only download method. Then correct the running configuration on the router.
CSCed96093—If you are installing BAC BA 2.6 using a different user ID than during a previous BAC BA installation, you receive the following warning message
chmod: WARNING: can't change /tmp/Installation.data" is seen when installing BACBA 2.6
Ignore this message and continue with the installation.
CSCee17129—When you remove a physical interface from a Cisco 10000 series router, the physical inventory in the BAC BA database is not updated. This occurs because BAC BA uses the SNMP ifTable to update interface configurations. The Cisco 10000 router does not update the SNMP ifTable when an interface is removed, so this information is not transmitted to the BAC BA database.
CSCef11779—When you use the Bulk Provisioning tool to add PVCS with the Deployed download method, BAC BA correctly adds the PVCs to its database. However, the addition of these PVCs generates error codes. Ignore these error codes.
CSCef26854—On rare occasions, the Configuration Delivery Manager (CDM) may timeout when you are provisioning PVCs using the HTTP download method. To work around this issue, reissue the provisioning request.
CSCef49989—Migrating data from BAC BA 2.5T(x) to 2.6 removes all existing synchronization reports. If you want to retain these reports, back them up before running the migration utility.
CSCef51510—During device provisioning, the Web UI might fail to display one or more expected images. Instead, it displays an X where the image should appear and text that says Next and Back in place of navigational buttons. To display the images, click the Next or Back text to refresh the browser.
CSCef56570—When you are provisioning or unprovisioning devices using the API, you might receive an error code (1517) indicating an authentication failure even though you entered the correct surname and password. This error happens intermittently. To work around this issue, retry the provisioning or unprovisioning request. To work around this issue, resubmit the request.
CSCef61233—Intermittently, in a provisioning operation, you might receive a "minorCode=0" message without receiving any result of operation message. This might happen when multiple provisioning tasks are running at the same time.
CSCef71080—The ProfileAdmin.idl in BAC BA 2.6 lists a rename_profile() call. This call is not supported. If a client invokes this call, the API displays the following exception:
org.omg.CORBA.UNKNOWN
CSCef75012— Under very heavy load, the BAC BA Web server sometimes returns an HTTP 500 error. It displays the following message:
the server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request.
To workaround this issue, resubmit the page.
CSCef82001—When you have migrated data from BAC BA 2.5T to 2.6, and then you attempt to delete all service features from a device, you might still see a role for that device displayed. This occurs if the device had PVCs configured in 2.5T.
CSCef88558—In rare circumstances when you are provisioning an interface from the Web UI, the Interface Selection pop up might display "Session time out" on the tree for modules and ports under the cards rather than the interface endpoints. To work around this issue, follow these steps:
Step 1 On your Internet Explorer browser window, select Tools > Internet Options. The system displays the Internet Options window.
Step 2 In the Temporary Internet Files area, click Delete Cookies.... The system displays the Delete Cookies dialog box.
Step 3 Click OK.
Step 4 In the Temporary Internet Files area, click Delete Files.... The system displays the Delete Files dialog box.
Step 5 Click OK.
CSCef91422—If the PATH environment variable is incorrectly configured in your user profile, the BAC BA installation script displays this error message: whoami command not found. The script proceeds normally, however. To work around this issue, make sure that the path /usr/ucb is in your PATH environment variable. For example, in the C Shell, set the environment variable as follows:
setenv PATH /usr/ucb:$PATH
CSCef92903—The BAC BA Bulk Provisioning tool uses a different template for point-to-point PVC provisioning and unprovisioning than the Web UI and API. The WEB UI and API do not allow a subinterface and a virutal path identifiers (VPI) to have the same value. As a result, if you use the Bulk Provisioning tool to add PVCs, you must use the Bulk Provisioning tool to remove PVCs. This applies only to point-to-point template.

TAC Case Priority Definitions
To ensure that all cases are reported in a standard format, Cisco has established case priority definitions.
Priority 1 (P1)—Your network is "down" or there is a critical impact to your business operations. You and Cisco will commit all necessary resources around the clock to resolve the situation.
Priority 2 (P2)—Operation of an existing network is severely degraded, or significant aspects of your business operation are negatively affected by inadequate performance of Cisco products. You and Cisco will commit full-time resources during normal business hours to resolve the situation.
Priority 3 (P3)—Operational performance of your network is impaired, but most business operations remain functional. You and Cisco will commit resources during normal business hours to restore service to satisfactory levels.
Priority 4 (P4)—You require information or assistance with Cisco product capabilities, installation, or configuration. There is little or no effect on your business operations.
