Introduction
Key Features of C7kM

Introduction

This chapter provides a brief description of the Cisco 7000 Manager (C7kM), and summarizes what C7kM provides for the Northbound (NB) system integrators.

C7kM is an element management system for managing Cisco 7000 series routers. C7kM works in conjunction with the Cisco Element Management Framework (Cisco EMF) to provide element management that enables service providers to plan, provision, and monitor network services on Cisco 7000 series routers.

The C7kM objects are broadly classified as physical and logical objects. Some of the physical objects are the chassis, modules and interfaces whereas, the logical objects are the ATM and Layer 3 Quality of Service (QoS) objects.

This chapter contains the following sections:

Key Features of C7kM

C7kM features include the following:

For the NB systems, C7kM provides the ability to provide a generic entry point to the object model based on the type of network entity being modelled. C7kM provides access to services through class based partitioning.

The features provided by C7kM are:

These features are briefly explained in the following sections.

Synchronization

Synchronization is the process that ensures that the physical and logical object models reflect the actual configuration on the NE. This can also be forced via APIs.

Synchronization is a mechanism to update the object details stored in C7kM from the current configuration on a device. The synchronization process is initiated in the following circumstances:

Provisioning

Provisioning the C7kM objects necessarily involves configuration of the C7kM object. To manage an object using C7kM, it must be first deployed and then commissioned. This involves the deployment of several objects. Typically, in C7kM the physical objects are deployed in the following order:

Once the objects are deployed, the next step in provisioning these objects is their configuration. In C7kM, these objects are configured by setting attributes that are associated with the respective object.

Fault Management

Fault Management is the functionality that enables the NB system to recive the fault information on the Cisco 7000 series internet routers. The Cisco 7000 series routers can be configured to send snmp traps when undesired conditions are detected. These traps are translated into Cisco EMF alarms and raised against the appropriate C7kM object. C7kM allows the user to identify the faults or alarms generated by the routers. Fault Management also includes troubleshooting APIs and Alarms/Events raised by polling, or by the EM detecting a condition that needs to be alerted to the NB system.

Note   For more details on Fault Management, refer to the Cisco Common Object Model Integration Guide.

Performance Management

Performance Management allows the user to receive performance information for the interfaces deployed in C7kM. The Performance Manager collects historical performance data for these objects. This functionality can also get the real-time performance data via the APIs.

It is important that the systems integrator gains an understanding of the underlying class structure of C7kM. This information is presented in the following chapter.
