Cisco IOS Release 12.3(1a)BW

These release notes are for Cisco IOS Release 12.3(1a)BW running on the Cisco Multiprocessor WAN Application Module (MWAM) in the Cisco 7600 Internet router. These release notes are updated as needed to describe new features, memory requirements, hardware support, software platform deferrals, and changes to the microcode and related documents.

Introduction

The Cisco Multiprocessor WAN Application Module (MWAM) is a Cisco IOS software application module that you can install into the Cisco 7600 Series Internet Routers. The MWAM allows you to run multiple instances of Cisco Ethernet Service Aggregation applications, such as L2TP Network Server (LNS) and Service Selection Gateway (SSG) application software.

System Configuration Requirements

The MWAM requires the following system configuration:

Refer to the Release Notes for Cisco IOS Release 12.2(14)ZA1 on the Catalyst 6500 Series and Cisco 7600 Series Supervisor Engine and MSFC for specific information about the Supervisor Engine 2.

Refer to the C isco Multiprocessor WAN Application Module Installation and Configuration Notes for the Cisco 7600 Series Internet Router for specific information about configuring the MWAM.

Memory Requirements

MWAM memory is not configurable.

Supported Hardware

To use a MWAM module, you need a Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Supervisor Engine 2 with an MSFC 2 and any interface module with ports to connect server and client networks.


Note   Release 12.2(14)ZA1 does not support optical service modules (OSMs) or the Catalyst 6500 Series and Cisco 7600 Series Internet Router FlexWAN module because of open caveats CSCdx94072, CSCdx83584, CSCdx57576, CSCdx60406, CSCdx69921, and CSCdx63685.

System Requirements

This section describes system requirements for MWAM with Cisco IOS Release 12.3(1a)BW.

Hardware Requirements

MWAM with Cisco IOS Release 12.3(1a)BW requires the following hardware components:

Software Requirements

MWAM with Cisco IOS Release 12.3(1a)BW requires the following software components:

Cisco IOS Release 12.3(1a)BW is a special release that supports Cisco IOS Release 12.(3)1and the same features that are in previous Cisco IOS Release 12.2 releases, with the addition of MWAM platform support.

Memory Requirements

The MWAM provides two processor complexes that are equipped with 1 GB memory shared between two processors (512 MB each). The remaining processor complex is equipped with 512 MB memory shared between two processors (256 MB each). The total memory capacity for the MWAM is 2.5 GB.

The MWAM memory is not configurable.

Determining the Software Version

To determine the version of Cisco IOS software running on your router, log in to the router and enter the show version EXEC command:

Note   The image download process automatically loads the Cisco IOS image onto the three processor complexes on the MWAM.

MWAM Features with Cisco IOS Release 12.3(1a)BW Software

This section describes the features associated with the MWAM with Cisco IOS Release 12.3(1a)BW.

Hardware Features

Each MWAM card's six CPUs share a common Cisco IOS image but each runs independently of the others so that there are six unique IOS instances running simultaneously. These IOS instances use gigabit Ethernet 802.1Q trunk port interfaces to carry VLAN encapsulated traffic to and from the network through the Cisco 7600 switching hardware. Each processor complex (housing two IOS instances) shares one gigabit Ethernet interface.

Each processor complex has a 1 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) interface to the switching bus. This connection appears as a GE interface from the Supervisor module.

The MWAM connects to the Cisco Catalyst 6500 switch/Cisco 7600 router bus for data and control traffic.

Software Features

The MWAM with Cisco IOS Release 12.3(1a)BW provides the SSG features on the MWAM platform.

The SSG requires that you bind the user access network and services network to specific interfaces. Only one physical interface is available to the SSGs on the MWAM, which connects to the switching bus and Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Supervisor Engine 2 module. Subinterfaces are defined with 802.1Q encapsulation and contain multiple VLANs, each representing one network interface.

The MWAM with Cisco IOS Release 12.3(1a)BW also provides L2TP Network Server (LNS) on the MWAM platform.

LNS operates on any platform capable of PPP termination. It handles the server side of the L2TP protocol. Since L2TP relies on the single media over which L2TP tunnels arrive, an LNS may have only a single LAN or WAN interface, yet still be able to terminate calls arriving at any of the LACs' full range of PPP interfaces (async ISDN). LNS is the initiator of outgoing calls and the receiver of incoming calls.

External Interfaces

External physical interfaces provided by the supported platforms are not visible to the SSG software. This is an important advantage of the MWAM implementation when compared to the 7200/7400 platform. The MWAM implementation protects the SSG from interface and link failures. As long as the platform provides redundant links to other system components (for example, GGSN, AAA servers), the SSG configuration is not affected and its operation is maintained.

Use upgrade rommon to upgrade ROMMON image on processor complexes 0,1, and 2.

Before upgrading ROMMON image on processor complex 0, use khamd -m0 to disable the hearbeats for all processor complexes. After upgrading the ROMMON images, use khamd -m3f to enable the hearbeats for all processor complexes.

CSCea16955

A configuration causes the processor complexes to fail on boot-up or if password recovery is required.

Use recover-ios.sh <complex_number> where the complex number is [0|1|2]. Because the processor complexes come up without loading the startup configuration, use normal-ios <complex_number> to resume booting with the startup configuration.
