Managing Cable Modems

This chapter describes procedures for managing cable modems and includes the following sections:

Downloading Cable Modem Images

You can use CCM to download Cisco IOS software images to a single cable modem or to all registered cable modems associated with a specific upstream channel. The download cable modem software feature is supported for:

Downloading a Cable Modem Image

Step 1   Before downloading a software image, configure the uBR to send online and offline traps to the system running the cable controller.

See the "Enabling and Configuring SNMP Traps" section.

Step 2   If you have used Autodiscovery to deploy uBRs, you must set the SNMP write community string for the cable modems. If you do not set the SNMP write community string the software download fails.

Step 3   Select the Cisco uBR7200 series universal broadband router, cable modem, line card, or upstream channel that contains the cable modems.

Step 4   From the right-click menu, choose Maintenance > Modem SW Download.

The Modem SW Download dialog box appears.

Step 5   Check the cable modem version by clicking Show Version in the Modem SW Download dialog box.

Caution   Image files are provided by the vendor. Downloading the wrong image to a cable modem can result in the loss of functionality. Before downloading an image to a cable modem, check with the vendor to ensure that the proper image is applied to the cable modem.

Step 6   Click the Download tab and specify the:

Step 7   Click Download.

The Scheduler dialog box appears.

Step 8   Click OK to perform the download, or enter the date and time for the download to occur.

Clearing the Log History

Because the cable modem software download operation is not automatic, a log is kept for all successful downloads.

Note   You cannot obtain download results after clearing the log history. If you stop the cable controller and restart it, the log history is cleared.

From the Modem SW Download dialog box, click the Summary tab, and click Clear History.

Cancelling the Software Image Download

You can only cancel the software image download if there is a problem with the traps and the cable modems are waiting indefinitely; then, you can cancel the download for specified modems or for a uBR.

Step 1   From the Modem SW Download dialog box, click the Cancel tab.

Step 2   To cancel the download:

Adding a Vendor and a Product

Caution   No error is reported if you make a mistake editing the vendorTags.txt and userTags.txt files. Update the files only if you are knowledgeable about products and product IDs. Follow the file formats precisely.

Note   The vendor and product names are case sensitive.

Step 1   Open the vendorTags.txt file, located in $CEMF_ROOT/config/cblCtrl.

The vendorTags.txt file appears showing a file format example.

Step 2   Enter the following information:

Step 3   Save and close the vendorTags.txt file.

Step 4   To verify the newly added vendor and products in the vendor tags list, click the Tags tab in the Modem SW Download dialog box, and click Vendor Tags.

Step 5   To apply your changes to the vendorTags.txt file, click Update Tags.

Example: Adding a Vendor and a Product

START CISCO
uBR904 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.191
uBR924 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.1.255
END CISCO

Deleting a Vendor

Step 1   Open the vendorTags.txt file, located in $CEMF_ROOT/config/cblCtrl.

Step 5   To verify the change in the user tags list, click User Tags.

Adding a User Tag Group

Note   Before creating any user tag group, define the vendor name and product name in the vendor.txt file.

See the "Adding a Vendor and a Product" section.

Step 1   Open the userTags.txt file, located in $CEMF_ROOT/config/cblCtrl.

Step 2   Enter your newly created user tag name (group name) and list the cable modems that share the same image.

Caution   If you are unsure about the image that a cable modem uses, check with the cable modem vendor. Creating a new user tag that groups cable modems that do not share the same image can cause modem malfunctions after downloading the software image.

Step 3   Save and close the file.

Step 4   To verify the change in the user tags list, click User Tags.

Step 5   To apply your changes to the userTags.txt file, click the Tags tab in the Modem SW Download dialog box, and click Update Tags.
