The LightStream 2020 Network Operations Guide is a task-oriented guide that describes how to operate and manage a network of LS2020 enterprise ATM switches. The guide presents an overview of network operation and management tasks, describes the command line interface (CLI), and provides procedures for monitoring switches and collecting statistics.
Your network should be fully installed and configured before you attempt to operate it. See the LightStream 2020 Installation Guide for installation instructions and the LightStream 2020 Configuration Guide for information on configuration.
The LightStream 2020 Network Operations Guide is intended for anyone who operates an LS2020 network. This guide provides detailed procedures to help you operate the LS2020 network after it has been installed and configured.
Users of the LS2020 document set are expected to have a general understanding of basic data communications concepts, some knowledge of UNIX, and a familiarity with the interfaces used by the devices connecting to their LS2020 network.
If you are planning to use the bridging features of the LS2020 product, working knowledge of bridging standards and conventions is recommended. It is also recommended that you have a working knowledge of TCP/IP networks.
This guide has seven chapters and an appendix.
- Chapter 1, "Operations and Management Overview," lists network operations and management tasks.
- Chapter 2, "Command Line Interface," tells you how to use the command line interface (CLI).
- Chapter 3, "SNMP Commands," describes the SNMP commands available from the CLI.
- Chapter 4, "Monitoring a LightStream 2020 Switch," tells you how to monitor an LS2020 switch and its components.
- Chapter 5, "Administrative Tasks," describes administrative tasks, such as setting the SNMP community, changing configuration attributes using the CLI, and defining bridge filters.
- Chapter 6, "Isolating Port Problems," details trunk line monitoring, isolating trunk problems, and troubleshooting procedures.
- Chapter 7, "LightStream 2020 Statistics and Data Collections," tells you how to collect and view statistics and set up collections.
- Appendix A, "Software Recovery," explains how to re-install software onto the hard disk of the LS2020 switch that has experienced a problem.

- Commands and keywords are in boldface.
- In interactive examples, user input is in boldface.
- In command syntax statements:
- Parameters (variables for which a specific value is to be typed) are in italics.
- Optional arguments are in square braces.
- Alternative arguments are separated by vertical bars, and are grouped within curly braces.
- Names of keys on the keyboard are in square braces, for example, the [Tab] key.
- Control keys are indicated by a caret preceding a letter: ^A means Control-A.

- The installation guide tells you how to install and set up LS2020 switches and how to install LS2020 management software on your network management workstation.
- LightStream 2020 Hardware Reference and Troubleshooting Guide
- The hardware troubleshooting guide provides a detailed description of LS2020 hardware and tells you how to diagnose hardware problems and how to replace faulty hardware components.
- LightStream 2020 Configuration Guide
- The configuration guide provides the information you need to configure LS2020 switches. It describes the configuration tools and how to use them. It describes the configuration database and defines all configurable attributes and their settings. The guide also provides step-by-step configuration procedures.
- LightStream 2020 NP O/S Manual
- The NP O/S manual provides detailed descriptions of the most frequently used LynxOS commands and of the bash shell. It also provides a tutorial introduction and reference guide to the vi editor.
- LightStream 2020 Traps Reference Manual
- The manual presents an overview of LS2020 traps and how they are generated by the LS2020 switch. It provides the procedures for managing trap reporting, such as setting trap levels, enabling/disabling individual traps, and determining where the traps are displayed. It also describes all SNMP and operational traps: the descriptions include trap name, text, cause and user response.
