Cabling Specifications for the Cisco AccessPath-TS3 Model 530 Integrated Access System

This appendix provides selected port and cable assembly pinouts for the Cisco AccessPath-TS3 system. Further details can be found in the hardware documentation specific to each shelf of the AccessPath-TS3 system. If you need more information, refer to the documents listed in the table "Related and Referenced Documents" in the preface "About This Guide."

The appendix includes the following cable assembly and pinout information:

In addition, the appendix includes the following information on cable connections AccessPath-TS3 system data cabling.

Note This appendix specifies pinouts only for the pins used. Pins not listed in the tables in this appendix are not being used.

Identifying a Rollover Cable

You can identify a rollover cable by comparing the two modular ends of the cable. If you hold the cables side-by-side, with the tabs at the back, the wire connected to the pin on the outside of the left plug should be the same color as the wire connected to the pin on the outside of the right plug. (See Figure C-1.) If your cable was purchased from Cisco Systems, pin 1 is white on one connector, and pin 8 is white on the other. (A rollover cable reverses pins 1 and 8, 2 and 7, 3 and 6, and 4 and 5).

Figure C-1: Identifying a Rollover Cable

Access Server Shelf Cable Assemblies and Pinouts

Each Access Server Shelf comes with a console cable preconnected to the console port on the System Controller (also called a Console Management Shelf). These console cables can also be connected to an ASCII terminal or PC running terminal emulation software. The Access Server Shelf cable assemblies and pinouts include the following:

For console connections, proceed to the section "Access Server Shelf Console Port Signals and Pinouts" later in this appendix; for modem connections, proceed to the section "Auxiliary Port Signals and Pinouts" later in this appendix.

Router Shelf Cable Assemblies and Pinouts

Connecting Port Adapter Cables

The instructions for connecting the cables for a port adapter installed in the Router Shelves are contained in the respective configuration note for that port adapter. For example, if you are connecting the cables for a Fast Ethernet port adapter, refer to the document PA-4R Token Ring Port Adapter Installation and Configuration. The document is also available on the Cisco Connection Documentation and on Cisco Connection Online (CCO).

Connecting I/O Controller Cables

The console and auxiliary ports for the Router Shelf are located on the I/O controller. The I/O controller also has an optional Fast Ethernet port (see Figure C-9). This section contains information on connection equipment and pinouts for the console, auxiliary, and Fast Ethernet ports on the I/O controller.

Figure C-9: Router Shelf I/O Controller Connections

Console and Auxiliary Port Connection Equipment

The I/O controller has two EIA/TIA-232 ports: a DCE-mode console port and a DTE-mode auxiliary port. The console port is a DCE DB-25 receptacle for connecting a data terminal, which you will use to configure the interfaces and bring up the router. The auxiliary port is a DTE DB-25 plug for connecting a modem or other DCE device (such as a channel service unit/data service unit or other router) to the Router Shelf. (See Figure C-10.)

Note Both the console and auxiliary ports are asynchronous serial ports; any devices connected to these ports must be capable of asynchronous transmission. (Most serial devices use asynchronous transmission; for example, most modems are asynchronous devices.)

Before connecting a terminal to the console port, configure the terminal to match the router console port. Use 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit (9600 8N1). You need an EIA/TIA-232 DCE console cable to connect the terminal to the console port. After you establish normal router operation, you can disconnect the terminal.

You must supply your own interface cable between the auxiliary port and the equipment you are connecting. For console and auxiliary port pinouts, refer to the following sections "Console Port Signals" and "Auxiliary Port Signals."

Figure C-10: Console and Auxiliary Port Connections

Console Port Signals

The Data Set Ready (DSR) and Data Carrier Detect (DCD) signals are active when the system is on. The Request To Send (RTS) signal tracks the state of the Clear To Send (CTS) input. The console port does not support modem control or hardware flow control. Table C-6 lists the signals used on the console port. The console port requires a straight-through EIA/TIA-232 cable.

Fast Ethernet MII Connection Equipment

The Fast Ethernet port on the I/O controller has a single MII, 40-pin, high-density D-shell type connector that is configurable for 100 Mbps. The MII connector supports IEEE 802.3u interfaces compliant with the 100BaseX and 100BaseT standards. The single MII connection requires an external transceiver that permits connection to multimode fiber for 100BaseFX or 100BaseT4 physical media (see Figure C-11).

Caution Make sure input power to your Router Shelf is turned off and the router is completely powered down before connecting an external transceiver to the Fast Ethernet port on the I/O controller. If you connect an external transceiver to the Fast Ethernet port when the router is powered on, the system resets and you could lose data.

Figure C-11: Fast Ethernet Port Connection

The network side of your 100BaseT should have ST-type connectors (for optical fiber), BNC connectors, or connectors of some other type. The type of media you use between the MII connection and your switch or hub determines what type of connection you need.

Figure C-12 shows the pin orientation of the female MII receptacle on the Fast Ethernet port.

The MII receptacle uses 2-56 screw-type locks, called jackscrews, to secure the cable or transceiver to the MII port. MII cables and transceivers have knurled thumbscrews that you fasten to the jackscrews on the MII connector and tighten with your fingers. Use the jackscrews to secure your MII cable to the MII receptacle.

100BaseTX Adapters (Dual Router Shelf Configurations Only)

Each of the Router Shelves in a dual Router Shelf configuration uses a Model BL6000 MII-to-MII Crossover IEEE 802.3u Adapter to connect from its Fast Ethernet MII port in Slot 0 to the corresponding port on the other Router Shelf. These transceivers should already have been installed before the AccessPath-TS3 system was shipped.

The female MII connector on each Router Shelf is in an idle state, compliant to IEEE 802.3u, until cables are attached.

The Router Shelf software configuration must contain the following lines:

interface FastEthernet0/0  !  full-duplex  no keepalive

These lines are part of the standard configuration preinstalled on your router shelf. The inclusion of these lines stops the Router Shelf from sending out packets it will expect to see returned

The adapters have two diagnostic lights. For information on the diagnostic lights, refer to Table C-9.

The adapters use the pinouts required by the Router Shelf MII receptacle. For information on these pinouts, refer to Table C-8.

Switch Shelf Pinouts

This section lists the pinouts for ports on the supervisor engine module of the AccessPath-TS3 system Switch Shelf. All pins not specifically listed are not connected. Following is a list of the signal summaries contained in this section:

Switch Shelf DB-25 Console Port Signals

The console port on the supervisor engine module does not support modem control or hardware flow control. The Data Set Ready (DSR) and Data Carrier Detect (DCD) signals are active when the system is running. The Request To Send (RTS) signal tracks the state of the Clear To Send (CTS) input. Table C-18 lists the signals used on the console port for all supervisor engine module types.
