These release notes for the Cisco VG200 support Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3)T. These release notes are updated as needed to describe new features, memory requirements, hardware support, software platform deferrals, and changes to the microcode or modem code and related documents.

Introduction

The Cisco VG200 is designed to provide easy integration between Voice over IP (VoIP) network resources, especially the Cisco IP Telephony solution, and the public switched telephone system (PSTN). The current release of the Cisco VG200 gateways provides the following main features:

System Requirements

This section describes the system requirements for Cisco IOS Release 12.1.3(T):

Memory Requirements

At this time, Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3)T supports only the Cisco VG200 hardware platform. The Cisco VG200 comes preconfigured with the required memory resources, which include:

Flash memory—8 MB

DRAM memory—32 MB

Determining the Software Version

To determine the version of Cisco IOS software running on a Cisco VG200, log in to the router and enter the show version EXEC command:

router> show version Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software IOS (tm) VG200 Software (vg200-i6s-mz), Version 12.1(3)T, RELEASE SOFTWARE

The Cisco VG200 supports only one software image, VG200-i6s-mz.

Important Notes

This section contains important notes about the following topics:

Handling Incoming Caller ID Digits on an E&M Port

When using an H.323 T1-CAS E&M port on the Cisco VG200, Incoming Caller ID Digits may not be processed correctly by Cisco IP IVR applications, such as Cisco IP Auto-Attendant.

Depending on the T1-CAS line provisioning, incoming DNIS digits received by the Cisco VG200 after its first wink to the Central Office (CO) are treated as user-entered digits and are sent to the remote endpoint as out-of-band DTMF digits. If the remote endpoint is a Cisco IP IVR application, the out-of-band digits will be interpreted as a user entry and change the application response. There are two ways to handle this situation:

Managing Input Gain for Cisco IP Voice Applications

When using the FXO ports on a Cisco VG200, set the input gain greater than 10 to achieve adequate audio quality for use with Cisco IP voice applications or the Cisco IP Phone 7960. Enter the following series of commands from the Cisco IOS command line to set the correct value for input gain:

vg200# configure terminal vg200(config)# voice-port x/x/x input gain <value>

Permitted entries for <value> are from-6 to 14. Gain values higher than 12 may cause DTMF recognition difficulties.

Enabling DTMF Relay with MGCP

Make sure that you use the MGCP configuration command for enabling DTMF relay. If this command is not configured, DTMF tones will be not be regenerated correctly on the remote endpoint. The required command is as follows:

router(config)# mgcp dtmf-relay codec all mode out-of-band

Deprecated MIBs

Older Cisco Management Information Bases (MIBs) will be replaced in a future release. OLD-CISCO-* MIBS are currently migrated into more scalable MIBs—without affecting existing Cisco IOS products or NMS applications. You can update from deprecated MIBs to the replacement MIBs as shown in Table 2.

Caveats

Caveats describe unexpected behavior or defects in Cisco IOS software releases. Severity 1 caveats are the most serious caveats; severity 2 caveats are less serious, and severity 3 caveats are still less serious.

The following severity 3 caveats are specific to Cisco IOS Release 12.1(3)T when used with the Cisco VG200.

Description: Unable to complete an outgoing FXO call with a route pattern containing an asterisk (*).

Detail: When using MGCP with the Cisco VG200 connected to Cisco CallManager 3.0(1), a call using a route pattern containing the asterisk digit (*) is not completed. For instance, the route pattern 72.XXXXXXX works perfectly, but the route pattern *72.XXXXXXX is not received by the Cisco CallManager for processing.

Workaround: Fixed in renumber build 12.1(3.5)T2..

Description: The Cisco VG200 must generate one or more digits before users can get secondary dial tone.

Detail: When connected to a line with a secondary dial tone, such as a tie line, the Cisco VG200 remains on hook until it generates one more digits on the outbound port.

Workaround: Users can dial any digit, such as a "9," to access the secondary dial tone. The remote PBX should be configured to discard this digit.

Description: Audio signal is lost when using MGCP with Cisco IP Phone 7960.

Detail: When using the Cisco IP Phone 7960 with MGCP, when an MGCP command arrives at the Cisco VG200 to play a digit, the digital signal processor (DSP) plays the digit and resets the RTP (Real Time Procotol) timestamps to a new value. Because RTP timestamps are used by the Cisco IP Phone 7960 to determine packet placement with a first in first out (FIFO) buffer, audio is dropped and calls to an interactive voice response (IVR) unit become interrupted because IVR prompts are truncated or lost.

Description: Cisco VG200 FXO ports configured as ground-start in Cisco CallManager may become stuck in Power Denial state after resetting the Cisco CallManager.

Detail: This occurs when a call is made from a telephony endpoint to the PSTN by means of an FXO port on the Cisco VG200 and the Cisco CallManager goes off-line. A disconnect comes in from the PSTN while the Cisco CallManager is down, but the MGCP on-hook event is lost, and as a result the Cisco VG200 does not receive the required Deletion Connection command from the Cisco CallManager.

Workaround: Configure the FXO port as loop start in the Cisco CallManager Configuration page.

Description: The default value for IP Type of Service (ToS) is incorrect in 12.1(3)T.

Detail: The value for the IP ToS value should be 5 so that the IP packet header is set to time critical and packets get higher priority handling. In 12.1(3)T the default setting is 3 and some packet delay may occur with this setting. The default in 12.1(4)T will have the correct value of 5.

Workaround: Enter the following series of commands from the IOS command line to set the correct value for ToS:

    vg200# configure terminal vg200(config)# mgcp ip-tos precedence 5 VG200(config)# end
Description: Using MGCP with the Cisco VG200, entered digits are dropped on an outgoing FXO call.

Detail: When a connected user enters digits too quickly (for instance, to access a voice mail box), some digits in the middle of the pattern are lost.

Workaround: The condition is improved by reducing the voice port digit timer to 50ms. However, digits can still be dropped if a user enters digits very rapidly. To reduce the voice port digit timer, enter the following command:

    vg200(config)# voice-port x/x/x timing digit <50 - 500> milliseconds
