Management VLAN

The management VLAN is used to establish an IP connection to the switch from a workstation connected to a port in the VLAN. This connection supports a VSM, SNMP, or Telnet session. By default, the active management VLAN is VLAN 1, but you can designate any VLAN as the management VLAN using the Management VLAN window. Only one management VLAN can be active at a time.

When you specify a new management VLAN, your HTTP connection to the old management VLAN is lost. For this reason, you should have a connection between your management station and a port in the new management VLAN or connect to the new management VLAN through a multi-VLAN router. (See the Cisco IOS Desktop Switching Software Configuration Guide for details.)

Note: In cluster configurations, all links between the command switch, member switches, and candidates must be part of the same management VLAN.

To change the management VLAN:

  1. Ensure that the port through which you are managing the switch is assigned to the new management VLAN.
Caution: To avoid loosing your connection to the new VLAN, use a management station connected to a console port in the new management VLAN; or, connect to the new VLAN through a multi-VLAN or trunk port assigned to both the current and the new management VLAN.
  2. Click the new VLAN ID in the Available VLANs list.
  3. Click Select.
The active VLAN returns to the Available VLANs list and your new selection appears in the Current Management VLAN ID field.
  4. Click OK to propagate the new management VLAN to all cluster members.
To maintain connectivity in the VLAN, the new VLAN assignment is synchronized so that all switches begin using it simultaneously.

Note: The management VLAN cannot be changed on Catalyst 1900 and 2820 switches or on Catalyst 2900 switches with 4 MB of memory; VLAN 1 must be the management VLAN for these switches. The management VLAN is changed only on switches running Cisco IOS Release12.0(5)XU.

You can delete any management VLAN except VLAN 1 by using the CLI.
