For those on a tight budget, you can download shareware audio applications, MIDI files, and sound effects. We have provided a list of web sites that offer audio resources.

A.4.1. Digital audio software

The following sites contain software for writing, editing, and playing music, including analysis utilities and programs for generating effects, tuning instruments, learning music, converting file formats, printing scores, and many other handy utilities:

Shareware Music Machine claims to be the largest music software site on the Internet for free and shareware music programs for music-making professionals, enthusiasts, and listeners. Indeed, they have a wealth of interesting programs for Macintosh, Windows 95 and 3.0, OS/2, DOS, and even Atari.

Cool Edit for Windows (http://www.syntrillium.com/cool.htm)

Cool Edit by Syntrillium Software Corp. is a sound editor for Windows available as shareware for $25 and $50. Cool Edit provides a variety of special effects: reverberation, noise reduction, echo and delay, flanging, filtering, and many others.

Computer Music Programs for the Macintosh (http://shoko.calarts.edu/~tre/CompMusMac)

This site features various shareware and freeware sound utilities, editors, and processors for the Macintosh.

A.4.2. MIDI files and sequencers

The following sites contain information on MIDI shareware and freeware, MIDI-sequencing software, and public domain MIDI files for Macintosh and Windows:

The MIDIWebFigure A.4.2 contains a huge resource of information on MIDI-related subjects including many interesting DIY projects and some demo-, share-, and freeware programs. The MIDIWeb also features a discussion forum and links to other MIDI resources.

MIDI Farm (http://www.midifarm.com/midifarm/free.shtml)

The MIDI Farm offers resources and information about all things MIDI including a helpful links page.

Music Machines (http://machines.hyperreal.org/)

Music Machines claims to be the home of musical electronics on the Web. Music Machines offers images, software, schematics, and lots of tips and comments from electronic musicians all over the Internet. You will find information about MIDI, synthesizers, effects, drum machines, and recording equipment.

The following sites contain free sound effects and digital samples for a variety of keyboards in .wav, .aiff, and other file formats:

Sound Central contains samples for computers (.wav, .au, .aiff, etc.), samples/sounds for keyboards (Ensoniq, Korg, etc.), MIDI files, and many freeware and shareware programs for all platforms.

This site offers an archive of useful sound effects including animal sounds, bells and whistles, body sounds, car sounds, clock sounds, drum sounds, gun sounds, horns, laugh sounds, multi-FX sounds, and miscellaneous sound FX in .wav format.
