Part I: Build and Install

The first part of this book covers the building, installation, and configuration of V8.12 sendmail, the latest version as of the publication of this book. If newer releases occur, you should obtain the latest source (see Section 2.2) and use it in place of this version. The first part of this book also covers building, installing, and using the companion programs supplied with the sendmail source distribution.

Chapter 2

Discusses the reasons for using sendmail in the first place. Shows where and how to obtain the source and how to build and install the working binary and most support files.

Chapter 3

Lists the many compile-time macros used to tune sendmail to your site's specific needs, illustrates their use, and provides a comprehensive alphabetical listing of them all.

Chapter 4

Covers the easy creation of a configuration file using V8's m4 technique. A huge number of FEATUREs are described, each providing an easy solution to an otherwise difficult configuration problem.

Chapter 5

Discusses all the programs that are supplied with the sendmail source, such as vacation and makemap, and shows how to build, install, and use them.
