Here is a summary of the problems encountered and how they were
solved:
Interfaces in the up/down state Remove the administrative shutdown,
add IP addresses, and eliminate duplicate IP addresses.
The router was in boot mode Change the configuration register to indi-
cate that the system image should be loaded from flash.
Ethernet frame encapsulation mismatch Allow the host machine to
ARP for the router. The router then records the frame type in the ARP
table for future communication.
High number of collisions Replace the transceiver. It is important to
note that collisions aren't excessive until they are over 5 to 8 percent.
Token Ring interface in an up/down state Ring speed mismatch.
Adjust the ring speeds to match.
Token Ring interface in a down/down state This is a Physical layer
problem. Replace the cable or check the MAU.
