Summary
T
here are several commands that are supported by Cisco IOS, and it is
important to understand what each tool does so you can effectively trouble-
shoot network problems.
Some of these tools can cause more overhead on the router compared to
others. It is important that you judiciously use tools such as debug, so that
no unnecessary problems are introduced into the network while you are
troubleshooting.
Other tools, such as traceroute and ping, can be used with very little
impact to the router, and provide global reachability and path connectivity.
The show commands are abundant and are the most valuable tools in a trou-
bleshooting situation.
The commands discussed in this chapter were the following:
show
(global, interface, protocol, and processes)
debug
ping
traceroute
Information gathered from all of these commands can be forwarded to Cisco
TAC if assistance is needed in resolving the problem.
We also discussed the different router architectures in order to gain a bet-
ter understanding of the output from the listed troubleshooting commands.
