The first line details the total, used, and free amounts of system memory.
Following, you see the PID, allocated, freed, and holding memory. This
means that the processor has allocated a given amount of memory to the pro-
cess; if the process does not need all of that memory, it frees some of it and
retains the rest.
Protocol Commands
At this point, we introduce only the protocol-related commands. We will dis-
cuss the specifics of the outputs in the following chapters, as we apply them
in troubleshooting scenarios. There are many protocol-related commands.
We'll discuss only the major protocol commands in this section.
The principal types of protocols that are discussed in this book are TCP/
IP, HDLC, Frame Relay, X.25, ISDN, IPX, and AppleTalk. Because of the
sheer number of show command options related to each of these protocols,
it isn't logical to explain them all. We will briefly summarize the available
commands for IP, IPX, and AppleTalk.
TCP/IP
The TCP/IP protocol suite includes many other protocols. This section sum-
marizes the protocols and command options available.
Options associated with IP protocols are listed in Table 4.7.
